has the kind of awareness that you really can’t teach, and it shows up all over his game. He understands where defenders are coming from, how they’re trying to attack him, and how to use his own body and leverage to make those angles work against them. He understands the timing of the trenches, knows when patience is his friend, and consistently feels one step ahead of what’s happening around him. That’s a huge reason he’s been such a productive back, including a junior season where he ran for 1,648 yards and 18 touchdowns after already posting more than 1,100 yards the year before. He’s got that low, compact running style, and the first defender almost never gets him. You’ll see defenders think they’ve got a clean shot, only for Barkus to subtly slide off the contact, roll through it, and keep the run alive. He’s tough, he runs behind his pads, and he keeps the play alive because he’s rarely off-balance. Even when things get crowded in the hole, he doesn’t look rushed or frantic. He stays patient, lets blocks develop, and then slips through just as a crease opens up. But even with all that toughness, I kept coming back to the awareness part. He just has a great natural sense for when to press the line, when to bounce it outside, when to slide off a block, when to lean through contact, and when to subtly redirect before a hit lands. Those little adjustments are what keep him upright and keep drives moving. That’s what makes his game so good. It’s not always the loudest running style in the world, but it’s incredibly effective, and there’s something really impressive about a back who makes so many hard things look routine because he understands the position that well.
