Although he isn’t a varsity contributor just yet, Blue Valley North’s 5’10, 160 lb. RB/DB Kayden Augustus is putting together a productive and explosive first-year high school campaign on the Mustangs‘ freshman and JV teams, where he’s finding the endzone early and often. Top end speed, quick feet and suddenness in his cuts, vision, and physicality at the contact point helped him pop off some dominant reps against non-varsity competition. Also a standout sprinter as a middle school track & field athlete, Augustus has a great chance of continuing to play up competition and transferring his non-varsity superiority to the varsity level. Keep your eyes and ears out for this dude the next couple of years!
Augustus rounds out the top five class of 2027 prospects with the fastest 40-yard dash time at the KC Varsity Combine, with a time of 5 flat. He’s also the third athlete off the 2027 PRZ Next National Watchlist to finish in that top five. Surprisingly, Augustus didn’t finish in the top 10 of any other combine drill, but that’s why the game is played rather than on a spreadsheet. He has big time ability and measured in taller and heavier than his last official measurement. The wide receiver/defensive back is up to nearly 160 pounds and just about 6-feet tall.
Kayden Augustus is another tri-sport athlete that people need to know about. The Sunflower State athlete excels on either side of the ball and proves to be a dominant force with the rubber hits the pavement. On the defensive side of the ball, Kayden has a relentless nature about him. When he determines where the ball is going, he is going to do everything that he can to make sure that he makes the play. With that, Kayden has the speed and change of direction to get to the ball at a moment’s notice. Lastly, Kayden is a phenomenal tackler who finishes plays naturally and effectively. Everything that Kayden does excites me. From what I have seen, Kayden should be one of the most dominant athletes in Kansas in the coming years.
When evaluating middle school prospects, it’s important to keep in mind how much can change in a year. Watching Augustus’ film from last season, there were flashes of elite play and you could see the potential on the field. In watching a few clips from his play this season, Augustus has locked in and those “flashes” of elite play, have become the norm. Standing 5-foot-10 and 155-pounds, he’s a very decisive Running Back who does a nice job of sticking his foot in the ground and getting North/South quickly. Doesn’t do a lot of dancing around in the backfield or in space. Runs standing up too tall at times, but that’s a coachable change. Defensively, he can play Outside Linebacker or Safety. Has worked hard this off-season fine-tuning his drops and hip fluidity. Jury is out on what position he’ll predominantly end up playing, but he’ll be a good one.
