entered the game in Cedar Rapids without an interception to his name over the first three contests, and left on Friday night with two picks against one of the better, more experienced quarterbacks in 5A.
A smooth athlete that’s rangy on the back end of the field, Yager reads the quarterback’s eyes incredibly well, navigates the middle of the field with speed and fluidity. He broke on a post-route on his first interception of the night, and then high-pointed a ball in front of the quarterback’s intended target to the far side of the field for his second pick. The last line of defense for Urbandale, he’s a sure tackler, as well, that ensures little-to-no big plays happen.

Yager performed well in 2024 for an Urbandale outfit that’s experienced growing pains with a younger roster the past few seasons. With he and other seasoned guys returning, the J-Hawks could make some noise this year. Yager is coming off of a junior season that saw him produce 24.5 tackles (22 solo, 2.5 TFL), a sack and an interception. He also returned a kick. When we watch Yager in action through video highlights on his Hudl page, it confirms what I saw when scouting him against Iowa City West last fall. He’s a versatile defensive back capable of sticking in coverage or supporting the run. Yager effectively diagnoses plays and breaks well on the ball. It’s a set of skills and athleticism that play well on defense or special teams, too.
