Damien (La Verne) defensive back Jaxson Gates Jaxson Gates Jaxson Gates 6'1" | 170 lbs | DB Damien | 2026 State CA announced his commitment to BYU on Tuesday.

Gates was previously committed to Syracuse, but withdrew his commitment in late June. He also had offers from Michigan State, Utah and Boise State among others.

He had a standout performance at the National Preps Showcase this spring. Gates is the third player from California in BYU’s 2026 recruiting class and the fourth defensive back.

Gates stood out during the individual drills. He just ran a 10.48 in the 100 meters and his speed was apparent. He’s lengthy and used that length in the one-on-one period, deflecting balls routinely. Gates is committed to Syracuse and it’s easy to see why major programs have shown interest in him.
