Big-time potential in the 6-foot-2, 220-pound linebacker who led Andrean’s defense to a state championship victory over Brownstown Central last fall. Fighting 59ers have every chance to head back to Lucas Oil if he brings his A-game.
In-state linebacker Javier McCoy from Andrean is a hard-hitting thumper who takes great pursuit angles to the ball, very instinctive player who wraps up and can deliver big hits. McCoy has prototypical size and strength for the position; he flows to the ball with great explosiveness, burst and athleticism. Very twitchy for his size, he can hit like a bullet and dislodge the ball with heavy hits. He picked up an offer from Indiana after camping with the Hoosiers.
Javier McCoy is another two-way starter who made a big impact on the game. A strong and tough knock-back tackler on defense, McCoy takes great angles to the ball and is very instinctive. He is a tough inside runner on offense. The staff thinks he has a bright future in the program.
McCoy got his feet wet as a freshman and showed he belonged. He’s a longer back with good top-end speed and the ability to slide through tight windows when things get congested. His agility stood out and he’s got enough burst to flip the field. He finished with 367 yards and 4 touchdowns and looks like someone the staff will rely on more and more as he continues to grow into his frame.
Tough and effective between-the-tackles ballcarrier with strong skills as an inside runner. Plays with good strength, balance through contact, very effective in short yardage. Big and bulky bowling-ball frame. Picked up an offer from Purdue at camp.
McCoy showed what he’s capable of in regionals, running hard and making the most of his reps. He’s a bigger back who can lower his shoulder and move the chains, but he’s not just running into contact, he’s got enough burst to break free when he gets a lane. He finished with 367 yards and 4 touchdowns in year 1, and with his frame and physicality, he’s only going to be tougher to bring down moving forward.
Andrean quietly pulls out studs left and right and they may have another in McCoy. The freshman just put on a show Friday against Lafayette Central and this is all just the beginning. He’s a shifty back with good speed, vision, footwork, and patience all wrapped up into 1 package. he’s got a good frame and can handle the big workload as well. His 176 yards and 3 TDs on the ground all led the game as he scored all of Andrean’s touchdowns.
