Expert Analysis
Marcus Henry | Prep Redzone Scout
Gardner was one of the more intriguing young defensive backs to come through the event. Standing at 6-foot-1 with a long, lean athletic frame, Gardner immediately stood out because of his size and natural movement skills. He displayed a fluid backpedal, changed directions quickly, and showed the ability to move comfortably in space during coverage drills.
Gardner consistently used his length well to disrupt passing lanes and stay connected in coverage. He also tested well during the combine portion of the camp, showing athletic traits that translate to multiple positions in the secondary. What makes his performance even more impressive is the fact that he is only a member of the 2029 class. His varsity track experience as a freshman was evident throughout the workout portion of the event.
Gardner is an underclassman who should begin drawing more attention this fall as his game and frame continue to develop.

Gardner showed up to camp already looking ahead of his age group, competing with confidence and a level of composure you don’t always see from a Class of 2029 prospect. Throughout drills, he stayed locked in, moved well in space, and showed a natural understanding of how to position himself in coverage situations.
In one-on-ones, he held his own and wasn’t overwhelmed by the moment, staying competitive through each rep and showing good awareness when matching routes. He didn’t overthink his game — he played loose, reacted well, and showed flashes of real comfort in coverage.
For his age, the biggest takeaway is maturity and feel for the position. As he continues to grow physically and refine his technique, Gardner has early signs of being a name to track long-term as a young defensive back with real upside.
