Mayo is a talented two-way player who excels as a defensive back and a running back. He had over 500 rushing yards last season after transferring into Hillside. The season before, he averaged nine yards a carry and caught 21 passes, showcasing his versatility. More opportunities open up next season with the departure of some key pieces, so we’ll watch to see what he can do.

Mayo transferred into a crowded Hillside backfield as a two-way player and was the featured back for about half of the season, with at least 12 touches and 60 yards in five games, and fewer than eight touches in the other five. He’s a versatile athlete, able to help in a variety of roles. After the departure of a couple of key playmakers, we expect him to have a bigger role in 2026.

Eric is an athletic playmaker who truly can play running back or slot receiver well at a high level, in my opinion. Eric was a primary playmaker for a team that didn’t have a ton of options at times last season. Eric has very good speed in the open field and shows some excellent agility with the football in his hands, making multiple players miss in space on several plays in his highlight film. Eric is a dynamic kick returner who changed field position on several occasions with big returns. Eric made some nice catches over the middle of the field as a receiver, and he ran through tackles at times at the 2nd and 3rd levels of the defense. I’m excited to see how he continues to develop going into his junior year.

Mayo is a do-it-all athlete for Northern Durham, leading the team in both rushing and receiving as a sophomore. He lines up all over the field and most of his work is after the catch. Still, despite rarely being targeted deep down the field, he averaged 16 yards a catch last season for the Knights.

Mayo is an athlete who plays multiple positions, but we’ve listed him at running back in this deep dives piece. He doesn’t often line up as a traditional running back, but when he does, he uses his speed and vision to get to the edge and make people miss. It’s not hard to see how he averaged nine yards a rush and 16 yards a catch, even on a struggling offense.
