Expert Analysis
Matt Tate | Prep Redzone Scout
Cortez is an intriguing defense end measuring in at 6’5 225-pounds. He has lengthy arms and frame to succeed to at the next level. This past season, he had 26 total tackle (6 solo, 20 assisted), with 3 TFL. Cortez has good athletic ability due to good acceleration, lateral quickness, balance, and speed. Good initial quickness with a smooth bend to get around the OT and into the backfield. Cortez displays very good strength to power through blocks with good get off and block shedding ability. Stuffs gaps and attacks RBs. Runs through OTs with a head full of steam. Will use his relentless pursuit to chase down the QB or RB out in space downfield to get the tackle. Cortez displays good tackling and very good competitive toughness. He holds some D1 offers currently and is looking to have a standout senior season!

Cortez is an edge rusher with a high ceiling, already holding multiple Division I offers and possessing the physical tools that college programs covet. Standing at 6’5 and 230 pounds, he combines length, size and athleticism in a way that makes him difficult for offensive tackles to handle. His quick get off allows him to immediately threaten the edge and put pressure on opposing quarterbacks. While his production last season included 26 total tackles and 3 tackles for loss, his film shows flashes of dominance and clear upside as a pass rusher. Cortez has the speed to close on the quarterback and the frame to continue adding strength, which should enhance his overall effectiveness. This offseason will provide an opportunity for him to showcase his ability against top competition on the camp circuit. With continued development, he has the potential to significantly increase his recruiting momentum.
