– which as an unabashed public school football fan, I commend our #8 defensive lineman for riding it out with his boys for one-last go. What separates Mangiocavallo from most defensive linemen is how low and hard he fires out – a tribute to both his twitchiness and his ability to bend. This tremendous pad level allows him to routinely play with his hands above his eyes as he engages with his pressure key. These two attributes, along with requisite strength, leg drive, and hip activation, allow him to jolt offensive linemen’s heads into whiplash. Understanding how to play leverage, Mangiocavallo finishes off a turned opponent with a strong rip towards the play. We see a sudden burst when in pursuit of the ball carrier and max effort when trailing a play in pursuit. For someone 290lbs he runs very fast for a man his size, while also using proper leverage whe tackling. As a defensive line coach I may just be knit-picking here, but Mangiocavallo gets a little bit too wide when squeezing and I would like to see him be more physical with traps or kick-outs. Likely a schematic decision due to Randolph’s defense, I think that Mangiocavallo has the ability and physicality to play the dent technique extremely well when spilling. As per his Twitter profile, Mangiocavallo has committed to Georgetown.

. Dean has everything required to be a wrecking ball of a defensive end. To start with, Dean’s size allows him to manipulate linemen and either drive them backwards or toss them to the side. He can easily overwhelm a blocker, aggressively charging them with strength and extension of his arms. He does an exceptional job keeping the lineman from getting in close, using his arms to gain leverage underneath the shoulder pads and impose his will on them.
To go with Dean’s size and strength, he also displays explosive capabilities when coming off of the line as well as in his pursuit of a runner. There are countless examples of Dean turning on the jets and catching a runner from behind. When Dean gets moving with that type of speed, you better hope you’re not the one in his way. Dean can barrel forward and be destructive along his path to the ball carrier. Dean has already received offers from Georgetown and Sacred Heart, but I expect many more to come soon.

Dean Mangiocavallo’s versatility and tenacity make him a standout player on both the offensive and defensive lines for Randolph High School. While he excels in various roles, his defensive prowess is particularly noteworthy. With a background in wrestling, Dean brings a relentless mentality to the football field, evident in his aggressive pursuit of the ball carrier and his ability to make tackles down the field. At 6’2” and 255 pounds, Dean is well-suited to play both as an edge rusher and a three-technique defensive tackle. However, his proficiency in using his hands, likely honed through his wrestling experience, makes the three-tech position his natural fit. He displays excellent leverage and quickness off the line of scrimmage, allowing him to disrupt opposing offenses and make plays in both the run and pass game. In addition, he has great awareness in terms if football intelligence and diagnosing play in real time at game speed. Dean’s solid pass rush abilities, coupled with his strong work ethic and relentless approach, have caught the attention of college scouts, earning him his first Division offer from Cornell. As he continues to refine his technique and develop as a pass rusher, Dean is poised to make significant strides in the upcoming season, cementing his status as a force to be reckoned with on the football field.

Mangiocavallo might be the next blue chip offensive line prospect to come out of New Jersey. As an edge player on defense Mangiocavallo made 55 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 4 forced fumbles, 3 sacks for the season. I love the first play of his highlights where from the far side of the field on a roll out play he hustles to the QB while maintaining his pass rush lane, draws a hold, and hustles downfield to make the tackle. He is an offensive lineman too.
