Being one of the most reputable D3 programs in the nation, the Johnnies brought in a couple of out-of-state prospects to their event, with the most prominent being Darren Garrett, a top prospect out of New York. Garrett shined among the DB prospects, posting a 4.65 40 yard time to start out, and he was outstanding during the 1-on-1 sessions, proving to be one of the most physical DBs in the competition, using his hands very well, engaging in an aggressive, but very effective hand-fighting ability to jam his receivers and completely disrupt their catching ability. In the end, Garrett was offered by the Johnnies, his 1st official offer so far, and he’s bound to receive plenty more over the next year.

is one of the most well known DBs in NY, and for good reason. He came into the event with plenty of anticipation surrounding him and lived up to the expectations once live reps began. He was at his best pressing receivers at the line of scrimmage, consistently disrupting releases and throwing wideouts off rhythm before routes could even fully develop. What impressed me most about Darren was his recovery ability and competitiveness. On one rep, he lost footing because of the wet conditions, yet recovered almost instantly and still managed to get into the passing lane to break up the throw. The combination of reaction speed and confidence in coverage made him one of the standout defensive backs this past weekend.

Scouts and coaches are very familiar with Darren Garrett at this point. the number 2 DB in NY and the 16th ranked overall prospect, Darren is prepared to solidify his position in the state with a big performance down in NJ this weekend. Darren has received a lot of coverage from the PRZ team in the past, and for good reason. Darren impresses at every event he attends, separating himself from the pack with secondary skill you don’t see that often. Darren has been grinding all offseason, so I am excited to see what he does on the turf Saturday morning.

Garrett walked away with Defensive Back MVP recognition from both the coaching staff and media in attendance. Built a fraction under the ideal thesholds set by P4 programs, yet hardly an issue in my eyes. He checked in at 5’9, 160 pounds with elite incredible catch-up speed on full display. At the PRZ New York stop, he made life miserable for receivers in the best way possible. Relentless, in-your-jersey coverage from snap to finish. Targets didn’t get freebies when lined up across from him, every inch had to be fought for.
His movement skills stood out. No choppy feet, no clumsy transitions, just smooth, rapid steps with controlled hip turns when carrying routes vertically. There’s very little unnecessary motion when he flips and runs, which tells you the technical work is happening off the field. Williams looked coached, prepared, and confident in space. Credit to him for setting the tone at DB, and don’t be surprised if my partner Cory Lemer keeps pushing his stock as he heads into his junior year at FDR-Hyde Park.

. Garrett was extremely impressive in Warwick. I saw him at out NJ Showcase, where he had an impressive showing, and he backed that up in Warwick. The 2028 Prospect, measured in at 5’9″ 156-Pounds, displaying a good build for a DB. I like him mainly as a Corner, and I have confidence he will fill out his frame throughout High School. He was touted as one of the most challenging DB’s, Wide Receivers have played. He was excellent with his hands, and displayed good Press Coverage. I liked his footwork, as he was excellent in back tracking, and followed it up with a quick acceleration to make a play on the ball. He has a solid frame, and using his body more on reps toward the sideline is something he can work on moving forward. Regardless, Garrett was extremely impressive and is easily one of the top DB’s in the state in 2028.

I thought that Darren was the best DB at the Warwick event. He looks like he’s been playing DB for 20 years. Moves laterally super well, looks incredibly smooth and comfortable in coverage and backpedaling, plays through the ball. He’s aggressive, not afraid to get his nose dirty. He might have taken the most reps of anyone at the camp, and looked like the same guy on the last rep as the first rep. His physicality and movement in coverage is beyond his years. He also jumped an 8’8 broad as a ’28 which is awesome. He’s gonna be an awesome player for a long time.

as the best defender in the secondary. Garrett adjusts to the in-flight ball very well. That said, it is no coincidence that he was the most reactive defensive back too, breaking on the ball really well. Unafraid to challenge defenders at the line of scrimmage, Garrett was rather “sticky” when he pressed and jammed at the line. I think what helped him stay stuck on receivers like white-on-rice was his eye disciplined. On numerous reps I noticed him leering, burning a hole if you would, through his matchups hips. Moreover, Garrett was one to always play the ball at its apex. One opportunity to continue to grow came on a rep that I demanded he take against who I thought was the camps top wide receiver. On vertical balls, I would like to see him use his body to influence his matchup toward the sideline more, eliminating space for them to comfortably play the ball in-bounds.

Darren was the top performing defensive back at the NY Showcase and consistently stood out throughout the day. He really shined during positional drills, showing sharp cuts, excellent change of direction ability, and a low pad level when driving back upfield. His footwork was clean and active at all times, allowing him to transition smoothly and get his hips around without losing balance or speed.
In one on one situations, Darren mirrored receivers extremely well and stayed in phase throughout the route. He showed off his defensive back skills with a strong pass breakup, swatting the ball away in coverage and reinforcing his ability to make plays on the ball. Overall, Darren proved why he is the #1 DB and #10 overall prospect in the entire state.

I thought Darren’s athleticism stood out amongst all the athletes at camp-let alone class of 2028 kids. He jumped a 9’5 broad and his explosion was obvious watching him move. He can grow, and likely will, but he could play DB at 5’8 right now and give college level athletes fits. There’s a reason we’ve got him ranked as NY’s #1 DB/ATH, I’m a big fan of his game.
