Expert Analysis
Vic Castillo | Prep Redzone Scout
A prospect who had been relatively quiet on social media until late September, when he posted his junior midseason tape showcasing more than 25 tackles, including four tackles for loss and an interception.
He was a new name to me during the offseason, so I’m glad to see him loading up his Hudl with legitimate game tape. I thought he had been relatively quiet on social media last year as well, but he is finally giving me more production to evaluate.
He also looks to have added about five pounds of muscle to his frame since I last saw him and carries an impressive 4.1 GPA.
Currently ranked inside the top 350 prospects in his class with a priority Division II grade, he is someone I would still love to see live before the season ends.
His midseason highlight tape runs nearly six minutes, with most of his production coming as a defensive end in a four down-linemen defensive front.
His first rep has him intercepting a tipped pass and nearly returning it for a touchdown. Good awareness and opportunistic playmaking ability. He recognizes the opportunity, reacts quickly and puts himself in position to capitalize on a mistake by the offense.
His second rep showcases his pursuit skills, ultimately resulting in a half sack. He generates solid penetration and push off the snap, continues pursuing the football and gives effort through the whistle until he eventually finds himself in the quarterback’s lap.
I like that he doesn’t give up on the play when his initial rush doesn’t immediately produce results. He keeps working and eventually makes an impact.
He also gets kicked inside on occasion, aligning head up over guards and showing some versatility across the defensive front. On one of those interior reps, he nearly comes away with a solo sack after executing an inside spin move.
There is legitimate potential here, especially when you consider his ability to generate penetration, pursue the football and contribute from multiple alignments.
My biggest concern is consistency in how he finishes his reps.
He flashes serious potential on a regular basis, but sometimes those flashes come during the first half of a rep, while other times they don’t appear until the second half. I want to see him put everything together from the snap through the whistle at a more consistent clip.
The tools are there. The effort is there. The production is beginning to speak for itself.
Now, I want to see him consistently combine his initial burst, hand usage, pursuit and finishing ability into complete reps.
He remains an intriguing priority Division II prospect with room to elevate his stock. Hopefully, I can get out to see him live sooner rather than later and get a better understanding of just how high his ceiling might be.

had a good showcase playing as an edge defender. He has a good size (6’3″) and strength. He is also a good athlete. He was good the entire showcase. He was especially good during one-on-one competitions. He is excellent at using his athleticism and strength to get around offensive tackles. He also uses his hands well as a pass rusher. Derr is a complete package, and Prep Redzone should rank him.

is a good edge defender from Cedar Crest. He does a good job of setting the edge and not letting anything outside him. He also gets off the ball quickly and does a good job of chasing plays. He has a quick 1st step and uses it well to get around offensive tackles. He has a good bend to his game, which helps him as a pass rusher. He also has a motor that never quits, as he is constantly chasing plays all over the field. Derr has a bright future ahead of him as an edge defender.
