Skutt Catholic has some stars on its defense, which should be one of the top units in Class B this fall. One player to watch in that group is EDGE defender

, who had a breakout campaign as a junior with 53 tackles, 14 TFLs, and six sacks. Beckham is a well-rounded edge defender who is effective as a pass rusher and a great run stopper. He does a great job firing off the ball with a quick get off and twitchy first step that can help him win his 1v1s with speed. Beckham also makes sure to keep his hands loaded and ready to get active when handfighting with blockers, showing he can use them to disengage. He can also win his reps with brute strength as he possesses a strong base with a powerful leg drive that help him move lineman off their spots at will. He shows solid bend around the edge while also having the speed to quickly close on the ball. Whether he’s chasing down QBs or RBs, Beckham’s pursuit of the ball does not stop as his red-hot motor is always running from snap to whistle. When defending the run, Werner showed that he can effectively set the edge by anchoring down and tracking the opposing back in the backfield, before ripping through to make the stop. Good lateral quickness.

has been given high remarks from my fellow NE PRZ scouts being awarded with 1st Team All-State last season. Finishing the season with 14 TFLs(!) and 53 tackles, his speed off the edge and usage of his length is hard to contain for opposing blockers. His ability to use his length and play behind his pads allow his to dominate OL in 1on1 blocks against the run, being able to set the edge and eliminate gaps by simply walking blockers back. One thing I want to see from Werner as a SR is finding consistency in his get off. While he shows the ability to time up the snap and fly off the ball, I believe he has the ability to do this with more consistency. When done well, it is nearly impossible to slow Werner down.

is a player we tabbed in the preseason as someone who could break out big time, and he delivered on those expectations. Werner ended his junior season with 64 tackles, 14 TFLs, six sacks, and two fumble recoveries. Since the end of the season, Beckham has reportedly been talking to quite a few programs that have expressed interest, including Columbia, Northern Iowa, North Dakota, North Dakota State, and South Dakota. Werner also picked up his first pair of offers from Northwest Missouri State and Nebraska-Kearney.

looks ready to take on a bigger role. Werner ended his sophomore season with 22 tackles, two TFLs, and two sacks as he helped Skutt Catholic claim the Class B championship. The biggest thing that stands out about Beckham when watching tape is his intense motor and non-stop pursuit of the ball. Werner was consistently near the ball, even when coming from the backside of the play or when having to hawk down backs 10-15 yards downfield, he was right in the mix. He plays with a mean streak that you can see with his violent use of hands to disengage from blocks and with his physicality when he gets to the ball carrier. Werner does a good job getting off the ball quickly and keeps his hands ready to strike at any point. Beckham also showed that he can set the edge to prevent any big runs to the outside. Good pad level when engaged and strong leg drive to force blockers off their spot. Beckham is also listed as a TE, so keep an eye out for him to possibly make an impact on both sides of the ball.
