The 6′ 206 lbs edge rusher out of La Crosse Central has been very active on the camp circuit here in June. His time in Eau Claire was a worthwhile trip. I was expecting to see the dynamic athlete show that he can be a mismatch off the edge with his athleticism and he did that. Avant is lightning quick off the snap, can change his pad level and make himself a hard target to punch. Plus his acceleration through the rep had OL chasing him as he attacked the edge. As soon as they thought they had the edge protected Avant flexed his ability to cut on a dime and leave OL punching air as he ran free to the backfield. What I wasn’t expecting to see was the 206 lbs athlete winning multiple board drill reps. Even while taking on the big OL in attendance Avant did a great job driving his legs, winning the leverage and body position battle, and constantly resetting his hands to maintain some separation so he could maximize his leverage. It was a great evening for the 2027 edge rusher.

Avant is an interesting DL/Edge recruit. I have been able to see the junior live a few times. While he is undersized for the position the kid just finds a way to win and impact games. He used his time in Eau Claire well, putting on a solid display of his overall athletic package. He checked in just shy of 6’1″ and is now closing in on 210 lbs. Avant ran a 5 flat 40, jumped 29.8″ in the vertical, had a 4.76 shuttle, and hit 9′ on the broad jump. This is a big summer for the junior, and I’m excited for him to show he is a mismatch at camps with 1 on 1 sessions.

Avant is a very intriguing 2027. Similar to Tyson above, Avant looks like he may fit best as an LB at the next level. He checked in at 6′ 200 lbs with a 6′ wingspan and 10″ hands. He ran a 5.22 40, 4.68 shuttle, and 7.47 L-Drill. Where Avant truly stood out from the crowd was in 1 on 1s vs the OL. Despite being undersized, Avant won a lot of reps. He flew off the line with an explosive burst and his agility while at top speed made him very hard for the OL to stay square in front of him. That mobility would shine at LB as well in terms of working through traffic. Don’t sleep on this kid.
