Cottrell is a big bruising back that looks for contact in the hole, and can gain the tough yards inside. He shows that he can break tackles in tight windows, keeps his feet going through contact and runs behind his pads while seemingly always falling forward with good lean. Although not the fastest in the open field, he makes up for it with a first level burst and never going down on first contact near the LOS. Cottrell also shows some second level wiggle/cutback abilities and rarely goes down on first contact.
