Ashton remains on our watch list, but does have a fun highlight tape. Last season, Ashton was mainly utilized at fullback (or power RB).
He was incredibly versatile for the fullback position. He earned quite a few touches, and I’m pleasantly surprised with his change of direction and explosiveness.
There are fewer highlights as an off-ball LB, as it seems that he was a rotational piece on D. Watching his full game against Okemos, I can confidently say that Ashton is a very physical, hard-hitting LB, but his IQ is a step below average. Ashton reacts too slowly for LB, and simply needs to practice playing faster. I really like Ashton’s potential as an off-ball LB, especially after looking at his FB/RB highlights. With a lot of practice, Ashton could absolutely be a college prospect at MLB.
Ashton had plenty of highlights at LB this season! Right now, I can only see midseason highlights put up, but there are some great moments through just a few games worth of plays.
All in all, Ashton is a solid between-the-tackles run-stopper. I like that he stands strong in the running lanes, and meets the RB usually for a short gain. I also really like the play at 2:45 where Ashton laid a GREAT hit on the quarterback.
That said, I’d love to see more physical plays like the one at 2:45. Pretty often, Ashton is in great position for a tackle, but doesn’t drive through the tackle like he should. This allows the RB to gain quite a few extra yards. Listen, I really like the foundation, and Ashton could easily grow into a college prospect in a year’s time!
