Chilly temperatures greeted those that battled it out last week to advance, and that will likely be the case again around the state.
But on the gridiron, the action should be hot and intense as everybody wants to take that next step towards making the UNI-Dome.
Here’s a look at the matchups involving north-central Iowa teams this week in eight-player prep football:
Kingsley-Pierson at Newell-Fonda
Another rematch awaits Newell-Fonda in the second round of the playoffs, as the Mustangs host Kingsley-Pierson.
During the regular season, Newell-Fonda earned a 32-22 victory to improve to 10-1 vs. the Panthers in the past 11 meetings.
Led by talented senior dual-threat quarterback Gabe Sievers, the Mustangs continue to rack up the points, as they have scored over 50 in each of the past two games. Sievers has thrown for 713 yards and rushed for exactly 713 more with 24 combined touchdowns.
But the defense has also been tough, allowing just 12 total points over the past two weeks.
For Kingsley-Pierson, Jackson Howe has 739 yards passing and 15 combined touchdowns as Josh Harvey has gone over the 1,000-yard mark with 1,055 yards on the ground and nine scores.
In that first encounter, Newell-Fonda raced out to an early 13-0 lead with Sievers rushing for 179 and recording three total touchdowns. Harvey, a sophomore, had 151 yards and a TD on the ground.
North Iowa at Tripoli
A combined 11 wins highlight this encounter as Tripoli is 6-1 and North Iowa comes in at 5-2.
Tripoli has reeled off four consecutive wins in the series, including a 42-6 victory in 2019. The Panthers have scored back-to-back wins since a loss to Janesville, putting up 126 points including a 60-0 victory over Rockford.
North Iowa, meanwhile, has clipped Northwood-Kensett and Turkey Valley by two points over the past two games and are on a three-game win streak. Conner Piehl has 635 yards passing and a team-high 1,167 yards rushing with 32 combined TDs.
Brett Doege leads the Bison with 790 yards passing and 11 touchdowns with Max Schaefer rushing for 691 and seven scores. Noah Hofmann has caught 17 passes for 288 yards and six scores.
Harris-Lake Park at Coon Rapids-Bayard
These two meet for the first time since the 2007 season when Harris-Lake Park earned a 30-9 victory. Many things, though, have changed since that time.
Coon Rapids-Bayard earned a bye after winning a district title. They have allowed just 32 points in the past four games highlighted by a 49-0 shutout over Glidden-Ralston.
Gabe Obert has 827 yards rushing and 13 scores on just 82 carries for the Crustaders, with Tanner Oswald adding 407 yards passing and nine total TDs.
Harris-Lake Park took out River Valley in a rematch, 47-16. For the Wolves, Lucas Gunderson has 824 total yards including 12 touchdowns.
