With signing day a little over a week away, there are still several senior prospects looking to name their new home. We look at the defensive back position and bring you nine DB prospects that are still uncommitted.
Jeremiah Truitt Jeremiah Truitt 5'10" | 165 lbs | DB Omaha Westside | 2023 State NE | Omaha Westside | 5’10” 175 lbs
– Offers: Southwest Minnesota State, Peru State, and Valparaiso.
– The first thing that stands out to me about Jeremiah is his aggression and physicality on the field.
– He doesn’t mind getting his hands in between the ball and receiver and will challenge for the ball at the catch point.
– Truitt is also quick to break off his receiver and shoot downhill to make a tackle on the RB.
– Very talented and underrated player who could continue to develop into a dangerous cover corner at the next level.
Tairen Rahe Tairen Rahe 6'0" | 170 lbs | DB Lincoln Southwest | 2023 State NE | Lincoln Southwest | 6’0″ 170 lbs
– Offers: Northern State and Nebraska-Kearney
– A very underrated player out of the Lincoln area, Tairen Rahe Tairen Rahe 6'0" | 170 lbs | DB Lincoln Southwest | 2023 State NE defended some of the top receiver prospects in the state and played very well, allowing only nine completions of 33 passes thrown his way all season.
– He’s very smooth with his footwork and does a great job staying off his heels to make quick cuts.
– Tairen plays bigger than his size and uses his length very well to disrupt pass-catchers in one way or another.
– Tairen is a 3-year varsity starter with lots of experience with true lockdown potential, especially in man coverage.
– 19 tackles, a tackle for loss, four pass break-ups, an interception, and a forced fumble.
TJ Fitzpatrick TJ Fitzpatrick 6'0" | 165 lbs | DB Plattsmouth | 2023 State NE | Plattsmouth | 6’0″ 165 lbs
– Offers: Dakota Wesleyan.
– Lengthy corner with a quick twitch in coverage.
– He can be physical at the catch point and force break-ups.
– TJ has natural quick instincts and a high football IQ that make him a threat when the ball is near. He had a nine-interception season in his junior year.
– Great athlete in general that can play offense and could be a threat in the return game, given his playmaking ability with the ball in his hands.
– 26 tackles and an interception.
John Brase John Brase 6'1" | 185 lbs | DB Papillion-La Vista | 2023 State NE | Papillion – La Vista | 6’1″ 185 lbs
– Offers: Peru State.
– John is a bit of a hybrid player that can play either safety or linebacker at the next level.
– He has no problem stepping up into the box to help in run support.
– John really excels when playing downhill but still has the mobility to drop in coverage and cover backs and tight ends.
– Lots of upside with Brase and his versatility.
– 54 tackles, seven tackles for loss, two sacks, and an interception.
Ty Keifer Ty Keifer 6'1" | 180 lbs | DB Omaha Westside | 2023 State NE | Omaha Westside | 6’1″ 180 lbs
– Offers: Southwest Minnesota State.
– Runs a 4.5 40-yard dash and his speed shows on the field with his ability to close space and fly all over the field.
– Plays safety but can also slide down into the slot to cover receivers.
– Good ball skills and instincts led to several big plays for Keifer.
– 63 tackles, eight pass break-ups, three tackles for loss, three interceptions, and two forced fumbles.
Jackson Cyza Jackson Cyza 6'0" | 150 lbs | DB Fremont | 2023 State NE | Fremont | 6’0″ 150 lbs
– This was Jackson’s second year as a high-caliber producer in the Fremont defense.
– Jackson trusts his instincts and does a great job timing when he makes a break on the ball, usually ending in an INT or PBU.
– Playing safety, Jackson can see the entire field and quickly reacts when he reads run or pass.
– Cyza was also a reliable target in the passing game. He showed a knack for finding the soft spots in coverage and creating separation from defenders.
– 51 tackles, two tackles for loss, a sack, five interceptions, six passes defended, a fumble recovery, 21 receptions, 389 receiving yards, and three receiving touchdowns.
Owen Douglas Owen Douglas 5'11" | 150 lbs | DB Bennington | 2023 State NE | Bennington | 5’11” 150 lbs
– Very underrated player in the state championship Bennington secondary.
– Douglas is a corner that you can tell is comfortable being alone on an island against the opposing top receiver.
– Even though he’s not the biggest corner, he plays with a tough, physical edge and is a willing tackler. You can see him putting big hits on RBs at the line of scrimmage.
– Owen uses his hands very well while forcing break-ups, creating turnovers, and can jam/disrupt receivers when they decide to get physical.
– Savvy player that can be a big contributor at the next level.
– 48 tackles, four tackles for loss, and three interceptions.
Za’Kye Parrott Za’Kye Parrott 6'4" | 185 lbs | DB Omaha Burke | 2023 State NE | Omaha Burke | 6’4″ 185 lbs
– Offers: Southwest Minnesota State, Waldorf, and Wayne State.
– Came back from a season-ending injury in 2021 to have a great season for the Bulldogs.
– Parrott is a tall, lengthy safety that can play a very unique role on defense. He has the size to step into the box and the athleticism to cover middle and deep routes.
– He has solid range and can make tackles in the backfield, even when lined up as a deep safety.
– Still raw but shows several flashes of his football IQ and natural instincts in his tape.
– 54 tackles, five tackles for loss, five PBUs, and three interceptions.
Calvin Sassaman Calvin Sassaman 5'10" | 170 lbs | DB Bishop Neumann | 2023 State NE | Bishop Neuman | 5’10” 160 lbs
– Watched Calvin compete at the Warren Academy showcase, and I thought he did very well in all aspects of the event.
– In DB drills, he showed looseness in his hips and the ability to plant his foot and change directions quickly.
– He is a rangy safety that can cover with depth and has sideline-to-sideline coverage.
– Overall, Calvin is a great athlete who also looked impressive as a running back this season.
– His closing speed, ball-hawking skills, and play recognition make him a threat to make a big play on any given down.
– 16 tackles, five interceptions, a pick-six, 526 rushing yards, and ten rushing touchdowns.
