Considering South Carolina has just shy of 10,000 prep football players between the SCHSL and SCISA ranks, it’s an inevitable part of the process. But even now, immediately following our latest ranking update, we’re constantly looking for talent.
We want you to see what we’re looking at.
In our weekly series dubbed the Community Film Room, we break down players who have yet to find their way into the rankings. Maybe they’re young, haven’t had a chance to get their film out or – yes, it’s entirely possible – we just missed them the last time around.
In Episode 16, we’ve got eyes on a Lowcountry quarterback, two Horry County products who are primed to increase their stock, a tight end built for the rigors of the job and a linebacker who can blow stuff up in a hurry.
Khristian Means Khristian Means 6'2" | 215 lbs | TE Union County | 2023 SC , TE, Union County
An old-school tight end in a world that seems to forget about the position, Means plays the role like a power forward. He muscles his way off the line, calls for the ball and has a great ability to catch it with his hands out front. On top of that, he has no problem powering or chipping away at defensive ends. Means’ seam routes wouldn’t have been seen as revolutionary 15 years ago, but in the age of spread, the 6-foot-1, 215-pound tight end brings its back full circle.
Jaden Cummings Jaden Cummings 5'11" | 195 lbs | QB Summerville | 2025 State SC , QB, Hanahan
There’s so much attention paid to Hawks tailback Kevon Rivera Kevon Rivera 5'9" | 215 lbs | RB Hanahan | 2024 State SC that most folks outside the Hanahan program didn’t realize the development happening next to him in the backfield last season. In the 5-foot-11, 185-pound Cummings, this program has a potential star at quarterback – and a player with three years of eligibility left. Cummings can already make some of the sideline throws that upperclassmen frequently struggle to make.
Caleb Cook, LB, Fox Creek
At 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds, Cook certainly has the framed to play at the next level. He looks the part getting off the bus. But what stands out about the linebacker is how much space he can cover in the middle of the Fox Creek defense that tends to need to shade its other linebackers outside the tackles. Cook (pictured) is adept at spanning the entire T – sideline to sideline and into the backfield – and his hand strength means getting close is usually good enough.
Kenny Brown, WR/S, Myrtle Beach
Now in the post-Adam Randall era, Brown could become an even bigger piece of the receiving corps despite the fact that he’s also likely going to start at safety. After grabbing 14 passes for 141 yards and four touchdowns as a junior, Brown showed an ability to catch the football from the outside to the slot to the backfield. He’ll likely continue plenty of pre-snap motion, as the staff knows the 6-foot-1, 155-pound senior is comfortable doing his thing at any spot on the field.
Marquavis Johnson Marquavis Johnson 5'10" | 180 lbs | LB Loris | 2023 State SC , LB, Loris
Johnson’s highlight reel could easily be two-three times as long after he put up 38 solo tackles, another 23 assisted stops, 9.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, four fumble recoveries, three forced fumbles and a pick during his junior season. In just 144 seconds, though, you can see so many of his positive traits. The Lions linebacker is dynamic in every phase of the position and is starting to look like one of the hardest hitters on the Grand Strand.
