The Rebels took their second major 7-on-7 tournament win of the summer, this time in their home event. The Palmetto State Showdown 7-on-7 is one of the longest-running events of its kind in the state, and the hosts have a say in who walks away with the trophy more often than not.
This time, they took it themselves.
Led by Colby Shaw under center, Byrnes ran through the tournament after a first-round bye, beating Wren’s B team in the quarterfinals and Chester in the semis, scoring 43 and 29 points in the process.
In the finals, though, a great catch and an unbelievable defensive play made the difference, as the Rebels took down Independence (N.C.) 20-10.
Shaw was fantastic in the final, finishing 12-of-19 and tossing a pair of touchdowns and one conversion. On the scoring drives, he was a combined 6-for-8, tossing scores to Chamarryus Bomar Chamarryus Bomar 6'0" | 180 lbs | ATH Westside | 2025 State SC and Q Watson. The toss to Watson was a strike between defenders from a short distance, but the score to Bomar was a bomb, put only where the receiver could get it. Did he ever. Bomar leapt between Independence defenders, high-pointed the ball, twisted away, and landed for a score that covered most of the 40-yard field.
“To be honest, I meant to throw that a little further,” Shaw said with a grin. “I know he can make those, plays, so I wasn’t too worried about it. That was a great catch, and Kyai made some great catches, too.”
The catch that essentially ended the game, though, came on the defensive side of the ball for the Rebels. Miquel Dingle Miquel Dingle 6'2" | 210 lbs | LB Byrnes | 2023 State SC , who committed to Texas Tech last week, got a defensive stop and three crucial points on Independence’s last drive of the game. The speedy linebacker broke on a pass over the middle out of nowhere, executing a full layout and curling his arm just under the ball as he hit the turf. It was just one of several tough plays Dingle made on the day, including being very disruptive on routes in the middle of the field and covering well underneath.
“Bit time players make big time plays in big time spots,” Shaw said. “He’s having a really great summer.”
With Byrnes headed into four days of work before Dead Week, Shaw said he and his teammates are progressing toward where they want to be.
“I feel like we played pretty good as a team,” Shaw said. “There were some points where we could’ve given up and the game could’ve gone either way, but we had players step up and make plays when we needed it. That’s what’s special about this team, just how tight we are as a team. Our sideline was our biggest fan, and that helped us a lot.”
