And each player on the squad makes sure to hold his teammate responsible for upholding his end of it all.
That includes Class of 2021’s Gabe Gidel, a swiss-army-knife of a player for the Wildcats last year.
Gidel saw time at several positions for Humboldt in 2019 as a junior, recording a team-high 21 receptions for 147 yards. He also picked up 55 yards and a touchdown on the ground while recording 34.5 tackles on defense.
“I’ve played receiver, linebacker, and last year, they moved me to fullback,” Gidel said. “I’m not 100 percent sure what Coach (Derrick) Elman has in mind for this year, but I will play anywhere he puts me to do the best I can – and help my team win.”
That also includes early, early morning workouts.
“Me and my teammates started getting together every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday to do speed workouts at 6 a.m,” Gidel said. “We always hold each other accountable for anyone who decides to sleep in.”
Along with Gidel, Humboldt also returns the likes of Caden Matson, Jordan Jensen, Tanner McKimmey, Sam Fischer, Jake Lenning and Colton Goodell this coming year.
Gidel also recorded a pair of takeaways last season and helped out in the return game by fielding a handful of kickoffs. With Jamison Heinz, Matt Miller and others having moved on, more responsibility will likely fall onto his shoulders.
“I’m just looking forward to the team being together as one and working towards a common goal together,” he said. “It’s always easier to work together as a group rather than with a select few.”
Gidel has been receiving interest from several Div. III schools including Central, Wartburg and Dordt. Like many of his teammates, he is also a multi-sport standout for the Wildcats.
“I’m not sure where I will play yet whether it’s football, basketball or golf,” he said. “I’m still interested in what each coach has in mind. It’s also been interesting to listen to each coach and how their philosophies differ from each other.”
For now, Gidel will focus on enjoying his final season in Humboldt on the athletic fields, which is something he has waited for over the years.
“It means a lot to me that my family grew up here in Humboldt like my father, cousins, uncles,” he said. “Ever since I was little I always dreamed about running out on Friday nights wearing blue and gold. I always loved watching my dad’s old game film and seeing him run out on Mason Maach.
“I can’t believe I only have one year left and I’m looking to make the most of it!”
