National Signing Day is Wednesday and Prep Redzone Oklahoma will have plenty of coverage of the state's 2022 class signing with their future college programs. However, while signing day is a great time to think about the future, it's also a great time to look back. In this post, we go four years into the past to take a look at the 2018 class coming out of Oklahoma. 2018 was prior to Prep Redzone Oklahoma so instead of PRZ rankings, we're using the top ten rankings from 247 Sports and Rivals for Oklahoma.
The top nine players in both rankings all consist of the same players but in different spots but the final spot feature two different players. Former Southmoore and Westmoore offensive lineman Brey Walker was rated as the top prospect coming out of the 2018 class by both outlets. Here are the complete top tens from both 247 Sports & Rivals from that 2018 class. Below, we'll take a look at some of the notable players who were not in the top ten but have had strong college careers.
247 SPORTS TOP TEN
1) Brey Walker - Offensive Lineman - Westmoore (Oklahoma)
2) Josh Proctor - Defensive Back - Owasso (Ohio State)
3) Ron Tatum - Defensive Lineman - Putnam City (Oklahoma)
4) Jalen Redmond - Defensive End - Midwest City (Oklahoma)
5) CJ Moore - Wide Receiver - Union (Oklahoma State)
6) Casey Thompson - Quarterback - Newcastle (Texas)
7) Owen Condon - Offensive Lineman - Bishop McGuinness (Georgia)
8) Jordan Kelley - Defensive Lineman - Union (Oklahoma)
9) Sean Shaw - Wide Receiver - Jones (Iowa State)
10) Bryce Bray - Offensive Lineman - Bixby (Oklahoma State)
RIVALS TOP TEN
1) Brey Walker - Offensive Lineman - Westmoore (Oklahoma)
2) Josh Proctor - Defensive Back - Owasso (Ohio State)
3) CJ Moore - Wide Receiver - Union (Oklahoma State)
4) Jalen Redmond - Defensive End - Midwest City (Oklahoma)
5) Casey Thompson - Quarterback - Newcastle (Texas)
6) Ron Tatum - Defensive Lineman - Putnam City (Oklahoma)
7) Sean Shaw - Wide Receiver - Jones (Iowa State)
8) Owen Condon - Offensive Lineman - Bishop McGuinness (Georgia)
9) Jordan Kelley - Defensive Lineman - Union (Oklahoma)
10) Jacob Ferrell - Offensive Lineman - Sulphur (Oklahoma State)
Unfortunately for the 2018 class, a lot of the standouts and top ten prospects ended up not seeing much playing time at the next level. Several of the players listed above have transferred multiple times. A few prospects ended up having good careers. Josh Proctor, Casey Thompson Jordan Kelley and if Jalen Redmond hadn't sat out for a full year, he would have a case to join this bunch.
But there were quite a few players outside of the top ten on each ranking that have certainly excelled at the next level.
NOTABLE NAMES
Devonte Lee - Running Back - John Marshall (Nevada)
Drake Stoops - Wide Receiver - Norman North (Oklahoma)
Israel Antwine - Defensive Lineman - Millwood (Colorado/Oklahoma State)
Jason Taylor - Defensive Back - Carl Albert (Oklahoma State)
Pat Fields - Defensive Back - Union (Oklahoma/Stanford)
You can make the argument that the trio of Drake Stoops, Jason Taylor and Pat Fields not only should have been in the top ten but perhaps should be in the top five based on how their college careers have gone. Compared to the 2017 class, the 2018 class might have taken a step back in terms of talent but plenty of kids reached the next level and got their education taken care of.
