Expert Analysis
Mark Johnson | Prep Redzone Scout
Matthew recently de-committed from Syracuse, putting him back on the market as one of the best available athletes in the state. Stenbroten is a massive, athletic LB prospect. The long athlete is a nightmare matchup on the edge. He has the speed to be able to burst around the edge. His length and strength allow him to create separation from OTs. The senior is very athletic as well. He shows the range to be able to play off the ball and be an effective blitzer. Matthew is even a difference maker at TE/WR because of his athleticism. He also offers position versatility at MLB and OLB. Matthew looks and plays the part of an FBS LB. The film is below.

on our radars since his older brother was tearing up the field of SE Wisconsin a couple of years ago before heading to the University of Sioux Falls to continue playing football. To see younger bro Matthew, a stud PrepRedzoneWI Showcase MVP and veteran, add so much size, retain his athleticism, grow his dominance, and eventually elevate his stock into a P5 commit has been a very satisfying journey to watch, but it hasn’t come easy and didn’t happen overnight. Coming into the summer with offers from Illinois State, Wyoming, Air Force, Army, Northern Illinois, Columbia, Dartmouth, Lafayette, Fordham, NDSU, Northern Illinois, Sioux Falls, Colgate, Ohio, South Dakota, Lehigh, Bucknell, and Cornell, Stenbroten was far from unpopular on the recruiting trail, but an extra 15-20 pounds of muscle/weight gain, retained athleticism, and a standout performance at the University of Illinois’ prospect camp really platformed for him for what became that coveted P5 offer. The 6’4, 235 lb. LB/EDGE hybrid set up an Official Visit to ACC competitor Syracuse in late June, earned the offer during the visit, and announced his commitment six days later to the Orange. PRzWI is PUMPED for the young man. On tape, he lines up as a standup 5T/6i and occasional wide9 defender, but has strong reps as a WR and looks mobile enough to potentially play off-ball LB in college. However, his impact as a pass rusher is legit, as he can bend the edge, shows some quickness to beat blocking attempts to their inside shoulder, can use his hands and physicality to shed blocks, and has closing speed and is a strong tackler. Offensively, he can drop his hips to create separation, play and high point the football well, and make catches through contact. Stenbroten displays good speed and athleticism for his size with a dynamic skillset that has only gotten bigger, faster, stronger, and more physicality dominant as we’ve tracked him. Syracuse should be psyched about this pickup from the Badger State!

My favorite overall prospect yesterday by far was Lake Mills (WI)

as he was a DE prospect I to be honest, could not stop watching and enjoying his craft show off at the Minnesota Camp. He showed off superb athleticism from his early reps with his fluid base that his lower body showed off. It certainly didn’t end there, as he showed off a mega-burst into the backfield and in the cone drills was one of fastest flyers thru the cones I caught out of the defensive ends in attendance at camp.Matthew has absolutely massive motor that treats players in the backfield like they are just little rodents with all the physicality he offers on contact via his junior tape. He also showed off a plethora of length that goes beyond his 6’4 235 pound frame. Although he is a hybrid, he certainly checks my boxes as a FBS level edge rusher that I got my first glimpses of last summer at the NDSU Mega Camp.

. PRzWI was a big fan of his older brother Michael, who is currently a RS freshman LB for DII Sioux Falls, and believes he was under-recruited, but it looks like the same slips won’t be made with younger bro Matthew. At a solid 6’4, 225 lbs., Stenbroten finished his junior season with 61 tackles, 6 sacks, 6 TFLs, and 2 FFs, as well as 654 reception yards and 6 TDs at a 15.2 YPC clip, and D1 programs have taken notice. Ohio, Colgate, Northern Iowa, North Dakota State, Fordham, Lafayette, Dartmouth, Columbia, Northern Illinois, Army, Air Force, and Wyoming have all offered the ‘backer this offseason, along with his brother’s school Sioux Falls, and Illinois State offered up last June after he camped in Normal. Also a PRzWI Showcase alum who impresses in person, Stenbroten possesses length, speed, and physicality, and popped off some good reps on either side of the ball last fall. As a WR, he’s got some shake in his releases, ball skills, and contact balance after the catch, as well as 50/50 catch capability. Defensively, I like his closing speed, strength and physicality when attacking blockers, bend around the arch, and a good get-off & first step that gets linemen on their heels and allows him to win reps with either power or quickness. His frame is also a big plus for his future college home. Yet another 2024 out of the Badger State to know!

The 6’4″ 215 lbs junior lived up to my hype coming into the game. He has the frame of a D1 LB, and his play matched. Matthew plays both ways, but his biggest impact was on defense. His play on the edge was fun to watch. He is active with his hands, showed off some bend around the edge, and you could see the speed to track down the athletic dual threat QB in the backfield. Against the run, Matthew read and felt blocking schemes well. He squeezed down the line when he should have, and was stout when they went his way. The junior holds one FCS offer already. He is in for a big offseason, and senior year.

Stats: 7 Tackles, 1 TFL, 2 Sacks, 1 FF, 1 PBUrnOne of the top 2024s in WI is the LB out of Lake Mills. Matthew is 6’4″ 215 lbs. His frame carries that weight well, and there is room for more. Stenbroten also moves very well at that size. He can rush around the edge or drop into zone coverage with equal success and ease. Matthew has the first step get off to be able to beat Ol and TEs across their face. Lastly, Matthew is a strong edge setter who can walk his blocker into the backfield, shed the block, and make the tackle for loss. He has the tools and traits needed to be an impactful edge defender at the D1 level, and with a year of HS ball still ahead of him the sky is the limit.

Rise: 22 up to 10rnMatthew has been a rising player since his dominant performance at the Prep Redzone WI Prospect Tour this past May. That camp performance catapulted him into a dominant camp season as a whole. A camp season that culminated with him winning Defensive MVP at the Illinois State camp. That earned him his first offer from the school. Matthew has elite size at 6’4″ 215 lbs with 4.5 speed, and the body control to be able to play in coverage. He also has the strength set the edge against the run. Matthew looks like a future three down LB at the D1 level. He is going to star this fall in his two way, LB/WR roles. He will be in position to push himself even further into the Top 10 by season’s end.
