Sterling Heights Stevenson
Stevenson comes out of the gauntlet that is the MAC Red, and they finished 2nd in the league but advanced further in the postseason than anyone in the league. What’s surprising about the run is that Region 3 of D1 was the hardest region to predict out of any in the state. With Romeo, Dakota, Chippewa Valley, and others, this was a region that had to be won by a team that was sensational in all aspects.
Waterford Mott
Mott showed resilience and pride in their two close playoff wins against Berkley and Walled Lake Western, propelling them to their first regional finals. Mott had a very impressive senior class, as well as good talent coming up the ranks. This playoff run should give the program some newfound confidence heading into 2022.
Mason
Pulling off the biggest upset of D3, the Mason Bulldogs have plenty to be proud of. I was honestly surprised when they defeated Haslett, as I saw how dangerous that team was in the first round. But to defeat a team like Brother Rice? That’s something that can change the entire culture and attitude of a program.
Chelsea
The Bulldogs won many close games this postseason, ultimately pulling off one of the biggest upsets in state championship history against a Unity Christian team that broke so many records.
Lawton
Not going to lie, I was rooting hard for Lawton during their state championship matchup. Lawton is a team that had never gone to Ford Field, and dang did they have to defeat some great teams to get there! Lawton’s perseverance to defeat a great Lumen Cristi team in the semifinals was honorable, and they fought to the bitter end against Pewamo-Westphalia losing 10-14.
