Casen looked like the ultimate field general last night. Playing with the snap count, communicating new plays and getting the ball to where it needed to be post snap. I would consider Whitford more as a scrambler, but he had some really good flashes of arm talent. Zipping passes into different windows to his pass catchers in stride. He completed passes in and out of the pocket, over the middle of the field and to both sidelines. His lone TD of the game came from him creating time, rolling right and delivering a nice ball to his receiver. I like the confidence that Casen continues to play with week in and week out.
Casen did a good job filling in here and there last season, but now he is fully at the helm, and will lead his Rockford squad on the road against a stout Saline team. Casen has displayed good poise and a calm presence on the field and in the huddle, which will be exactly what the Rams will need in this tough test. Beyond the leadership traits, he has flashed a strong arm, good pocket presence and the ability to hit his guys in stride. I will be paying close attention to how Whitford leads the Rams early this season.
I really like where Casen is at in his development currently. The first thing I noted is that he is a true dual-threat guy. He is very comfortable in the pocket, taking a drop and hitting guys with pinpoint accuracy and good timing, but he is also able to improvise when necessary and put the defense in an awkward position to defend his arm and legs. The QB run is always a staple at Rockford, and Casen has displayed the ability to do it at a high level. I am extremely excited to follow his development over the next couple of years.
