With a pandemic riddled year, the Spartans still managed a solid season. They’re looking to build off of 2020 and make a nice playoff push in November when the time comes around. They have a pretty big hole to fill heading into the year and we will look at who could be the guy to step up in 2021.
Sturgis is heading into the season with its still new and young leader, Chance Stewart. Stewart was an absolute star for the Trojans back in 2010-2013. Steward was a star in Sturgis and eventually found his way to Hillsdale college where he became their most accomplished player ever. He became an All-American and won GMAC player of the year and a finalist for the Harlon Hill Award.
Stewart came back to Sturgis last year and in his first year with the program, they went 3-4. That might not sound great but the 2 years prior the Trojans had only won 2 games total. There was a drastic improvement from just the small sample size we saw. However, Stewart has his own QB issue. The Trojans have to replace QB Brady Webb who just graduated as was their signal-caller the past few years.
The player that the Trojans are hoping is ready to step up is up-and-coming QB Taner Patrick. Patrick is very young and graduates in 2024. The hope is pairing a young QB like Patrick with someone who knows the position better than anyone can be a great match and mesh well. Patrick is smaller but he is pushing 6’0″. He’s pretty light but as he grows he will put on some muscle and develop his body.
Patrick will likely be throwing to his partner in crime Roman Robinson. Robinson has decent size and has shown in the past that he has the ability to go up and come down with the ball. He’s able to jump and adjust in the air when he needs to. He’ll come down with it and keep his balance and break a run afterward. Defenses have to be sure to tackle him because he doesn’t go down easily.
The Trojans start their season on the road against Niles on August 26th at 7 PM. They then head back home for a game before hitting the road back-to-back. They will end their season at home against Edwardsburg on October 22nd at 7 PM. When that game comes around we will have a good idea of how this team developed in year 2. There’s a ton of buzz in Sturgis right now and we can easily see why.
