Flying all over the second level of the defense Friday night was Lunsford. He was covering the entire width of the field and had the speed to run down just about any ball carrier. To put up 14 tackles, a few TFLs, deflect a pass, and force a fumble all in week 1, you have to come into the season prepared and focused. Lunsford was ready for the moment and helped shut down Central's offense. A very impressive showing to start the season by Lunsford and I'm curious to see how he builds upon it.

The South Dearborn product had a fantastic freshman year and appears to be another step forward this year. His first week was just about as good as possible while showing a bit more physical development. He's clearly worked on his frame and it allowed him to win more right away at the line Friday. He was creating pressure, getting off blocks, and making tackles left and right. He ended the night with 4 TFLs and a defensive TD. Where Lane is at right now is very promising, but he needs to continue to produce at a high level.

The first game of the year for Long was as good as can be and showed as much promise as anyone in the state. He was in the backend and not only did a good job shutting down his side of the field with a few PBUs, but then had one of the longest interception returns for a TD you'll see. It was a 103-yard pick-six, but what made it so impressive was Long's ability to read it, undercut it, and then weave back through the entire opposing team to take it to the house. Long put on a show in Week 1 and should have your attention moving forward, too.

The tackling clinic that Nelson put on Friday was fairly impressive and if he continues to play at even half the level he just did, he'll have one wild season. Friday night, Nelson was in on 27 total tackles, forced a fumble, and picked off a pass. 12 of those 27 tackles were solos as well, so it's not like he was missing tackles, either. With 4 sacks and 6 TFLs on Friday night, it'll be hard to duplicate a performance like that, but to be able to perform at that level even once speaks volumes.

While Ben Davis may have fallen short on Week 1, they still have a ton of talent and guys who show up and perform at a high level week in and out. Last week, it was Spell's turn to step up and he did a fantastic job. 15 solo tackles backup that he was not only all over the field, but ahead of the offense in a few spots. He's got a good head on his shoulders and seemed to pick up things fairly quickly as the game went on. He's got a nice build, is a good athlete, and should have much more opportunity coming his way.
