In hindsight, Dillon probably should have made our Durham/Orange County quarterback Deep Dive. He’s ranked as a receiver because that’s the position he could play at the highest level at the college level. Technically, we’re bending the rules a bit here, as Dillon is primarily a multi-faceted offensive weapon, but he’s also a punter and a talented special teams contributor.

Dillon takes over as the top receiver in our 2027 rankings, despite hauling in just 11 passes this season. I was wildly impressed with his highlights as a quarterback, to the point that I’d offer him as a quarterback at the FCS or Group of Five level. But, he’s a Power Four receiver, with speed, hands, and the ability to create separation.

Out of necessity, Dillon played a lot of quarterback as a junior, playing remarkably well as a passer. But the draw here is his elite athleticism and ability to gain yards after the catch. He operates like a smaller, shiftier receiver with the ball in his hands and almost never goes down on first contact. The extra quarterback tape actually helped him, in my eyes, because we got to see how he makes decisions on the field.

Dillon isn’t going to be a volume guy on Southern’s run-heavy offense, but he sure can take the top off a defense. Dillon averaged 21 yards a catch last season, scoring seven touchdowns over the course of the season. He does a great job of making himself available for the ball and he’s a long-strider, moving faster that it looks on film.

Dillon tracks the ball extremely well, especially on deep throws and that allows him to make catches outside his frame or on balls that are a little bit off target. He has urgency on deep throws and crossing patterns, and has the speed to run by defensive backs. I’d like to see him disguise his route-running a bit more as he can be apprehensive on routes that involve cuts or change-of-direction, but as a rising sophomore, he has plenty of time to learn the nuances of the receiver position.
