The regular season is coming to an end around the country, with most states nearing championship weekend by mid-Novemeber. The Volunteer State is no different. Here’s a look at five class of 2028 running back prospects that we really like on film.
Amare McKenzie Amare McKenzie 5’2″ | 115 lbs | RB Alcoa | 2028 TN is a smaller back that has elite speed. He is a Jr. Olympian that plays basketball and baseball as well. Needless to say he is an experienced athlete in many arenas. As a ball carrier, he runs very patient to the first level, allowing blocks to set up. Then Amare becomes a blur! Using his smaller frame to his advantage by staying small in holes then escaping to daylight with quick feet. Every time he touches the pill he is a threat to go the distance. This year he finished with almost 1500 all purpose yards. He’ll be at the PRZ Next Middle School Camp in Tennessee this January, to put it on display.
Highlights
At 5’9 160 pounds, Dee McNealy Dee McNealy 5’8″ | 160 lbs | RB TN is built like a stud. He is strong with sneaky speed to finish long runs. I call him a hopper because he has that unique gallop in and out of cuts that resembles James Cook (Buffalo Bills). McNealy looks like a high school running back already in the physical, but as he develops his game on the other two phases (receiving, blocking) I believe he will be one to know by his sophomore year.
Highlights
At first glance, Mr. Nance favors Derrick Henry pre Alabama days. This is still a major compliment because he was a terror. Micah shares a similar running style and has the potential to be a big power back that no one can catch. That’s a deadly combination that most would stand in line for. His pad level can get lower, however, he weaves through traffic making it look effortless at times due to his confidence in speed and vision. Micah seems to always fall forward and runs with attitude. He’ll be at the PRZ Next Middle School Camp in Tennessee this January, to put it on display.
Tommie Reed Tommie Reed 5’7″ | 165 lbs | RB Memphis University School | 2028 TN comes in at 5’7 150lbs. He is a pro style ball carrier that looks for work with or without the football. Reed is braking all arm tackles so you better bring more to the party to get him down. He’s arguably just as good on the defensive side of the ball so flinching on contact is a no, no. Reed has meaty glutes, quads. and a collective lower half that can carry the load. Once he makes the decision to get vertical you can see the change of speed and his forward lean starts to turn over.
Chattanooga Prep’s running back Zachary Belyeu Zachary Belyeu 6’0″ | 210 lbs | RB GA is not a stranger to Prep Redzone. In 2022 he made it known at 5’10 200lbs he’s a grown man. Al Pops was on point with his critic and I am going to double down and say this kid is a monster of sorts. There are college backs that are not privy to his size. This kid works hard in the weight room and it shows. The most impressive thing about Belyeu is he got sweet feet like the littler backs. His mentally oozes off his highlights to be a punishing back that will make you choice how to get in his way later in the game. I also like how he’s not a one trick pony in the sense of just pounding the ball down the A gap. Nope he will take a toss outside and put his foot in the ground. I’m excited to see his maturation over the next couple years. He got it, if he wants it!
