These are the first five of the top ten best defensive skill players in the 2023 class. They all made their mark as sophomores this past season and are set to excel in the fall of 2021.

Alex already shows that he has the makings of a big-time safety with great length and range. Styles has tremendous ball skills displayed by breaking quickly on the football and high pointing the interception. He is an intimidating defensive player that is a physical tackler when closing on run support. <strong>2. [player_tooltip player_id="34316" first="Cam" last="Smith"] 6’0” 180 S Austintown Fitch</strong>
Smith is a dynamic athlete with the versatility to play several positions. He is especially impressive in breaking on the deep ball from the cover 2 safety position. He posses good speed which is apparent when coming up to make the tackle on perimeter runs. Smith excels as a kickoff returner where he can kick it in to another gear to elude tacklers.
<strong> 3. [player_tooltip playBryson Hammer 5’10” 165 S Fremont Ross</strong>
Hammer doubles as a strong safety and wide receiver. He is an instant reader and reactor as a down safety that shuts down the tunnel and tailback screen for negative yards. Bryson is a fluid athlete with both speed and quickness. He can turn an interception into a touchdown due to his mobility in space.

This multi-dimensional athlete rarely came off the field playing strong safety and running back. Quicker than fast, he made a ton of big plays at both positions and was especially dangerous to the opposition as both a kickoff and return specialist. At the safety position, Bebie is an instinctive reactor to both the run and pass.
<strong> 5. [player_tooltip player_id="93338" first="Trevaughn" last="Jackson"] S 5”10” 170 Washington Courthouse</strong>
Jackson is versatile enough to play either strong or free safety. He really rules the secondary with his skills as a pass defender along with the physicality he displays when making tackles in the openfield. Jackson is also a sure-handed wide receiver and returner who has a real burst once he has the football under his arms.
