GEORGE WASHINGTON AT HUNTINGTON

The Game: This is one of the biggest MSAC matchups of the year, with major playoff seeding implications for both teams. George Washington enters undefeated, while Huntington has gained momentum as its young roster continues to grow and get comfortable. The Highlanders are getting hot, but this is a major test of just how far they've come. Huntington won last year's meeting comfortably, 30-10, but these teams look much different in 2026. A strong showing against the state's top-ranked team could mean that the young Highlanders have arrived a year earlier than expected.

Keys to the Game: Huntington has to find a way to slow down the ground game led by talented GW sophomore RB [player_tooltip player_id='1826125' first='Jaden' last='Black'], who has been an issue for defenses since his freshman season. Few teams have found an answer for Black, and the Highlanders will need their talented linebacker group to play downhill, shoot gaps, and disrupt the Patriots to slow their run game down. That's easier said than done against a GW offensive line with size, talent, and multiple experienced contributors. Huntington's rebuilt front faces a tough assignment, and its ability to hold up against the run could determine the outcome tonight

Matchup to Watch: The biggest question is how Huntington's young lineup responds if George Washington puts it under pressure. The Patriots are a veteran group, and even their younger contributors have been varsity players since their freshman seasons. They're balanced enough to challenge a young team in multiple ways, but Huntington has developed quickly and has plenty of talent of its own. If the Highlanders can stay composed through adversity, whether they fall behind early or find themselves in a tight game late, they'll have a chance to make this a statement night. An upset would turn heads across the state, but how Huntington competes against GW will reveal plenty about its progress.

Score Prediction: George Washington 24 Huntington 21

JOHN MARSHALL MONARCHS AT BROOKE BRUINS

The Game: This Northern Panhandle rivalry carries major playoff implications for both programs, with a win potentially making the difference in a tight postseason race. John Marshall hasn't reached the playoffs since 2018, while Brooke's drought dates back to 2015. Both teams are looking to prove their programs are moving in the right direction, and a rivalry win would be a significant step toward that goal. With each squad fighting to stay in the playoff picture, there's plenty at stake beyond bragging rights. Expect an intense matchup between two teams that understand how important this opportunity is.

Keys to the Game: John Marshall's offense runs through junior RB [player_tooltip player_id='1624347' first='Dalton' last='Cooper'], one of the state's top athletes and a difficult matchup because of his size, physicality, and athleticism. The Monarchs nearly knocked off two-time defending champion Frankfort last week, showing how much they've improved this season. Brooke has a balanced offense of its own, with long, athletic wideouts [player_tooltip player_id='2220780' first='Grant' last='Yost'], [player_tooltip player_id='2370488' first='Bryden' last='Horstin'], and [player_tooltip player_id='1221855' first='Crosby' last='Morris'] capable of challenging John Marshall's secondary. The Bruins need to make the Monarchs respect the passing game while finding ways to produce consistently on offense to pull out the win.

Matchup to Watch: Brooke's front faces the challenge of containing Cooper before he can reach the open field, where his power and speed become even more dangerous. The Bruins have the talent up front to challenge John Marshall's offensive line, but they'll need to win at the point of attack and get Cooper off schedule. On the other side, the Monarchs have a major weapon in WR [player_tooltip player_id='2076798' first='Landen' last='Snyder'], one of the top receivers in the class and a tough 1-on-1 matchup if Brooke doesn't provide safety help. How the Bruins balance their coverage against Snyder while committing enough defenders to Cooper could decide this rivalry game.

Score Prediction: John Marshall 28 Brooke 21

BLUEFIELD BEAVERS AT FAIRMONT SENIOR POLAR BEARS

The Game: Throw out the record books for a matchup that has developed into a rivalry over the years, fueled by playoff battles back when both programs competed in the old Class AA. These teams may not cross paths in the postseason for the foreseeable future, but the emotions from those past meetings could carry over into tonight. Fairmont Senior isn't having the kind of season the program is accustomed to, but the Polar Bears still have enough talent to give the #6 AA Beavers a test. The teams haven't met since the 2020 playoffs, when Fairmont Senior came away with a 21-19 victory, and this matchup helped determine state championships throughout the 2010s. This could be another classic if the Polar Bears can elevate their play tonight.

Keys to the Game: Fairmont Senior has to find a way to limit explosive plays against a Bluefield team loaded with talent at every level on both sides of the ball. The Polar Bears have the athletes to compete offensively, but they'll need to find ways to get stops and create turnovers to keep the Beavers from taking control. Bluefield will face its own challenges if Fairmont Senior's playmakers rise to the occasion. The emergence of 2029 ATH [player_tooltip player_id='1743469' first='Elijah' last='Holmes'] as a contributor at both receiver and running back adds serious playmaker to the Polar Bears' offense who can score on any touch. If Fairmont Senior can get its athletes going and make Bluefield work for every score, this could become a much more competitive game.

Matchup to Watch: 2028 Bluefield QB [player_tooltip player_id='1166648' first='Max' last='Simpson'] has a loaded group of skill players around him, and that combination will put pressure on the Fairmont Senior secondary. The challenge could look similar to the one University presented two weeks ago, when the Polar Bears surrendered 55 points in a blowout loss. Fairmont Senior needs to show progress from that performance and find ways to keep Simpson and the Beavers' playmakers from taking over. If the Polar Bears have made the necessary adjustments, they could make this a more competitive matchup than the recent results suggest. It will still be a major test against one of Class AA's top teams.

Score Prediction: Bluefield 48 Fairmont Senior 21

LIBERTY RAIDERS AT RITCHIE COUNTY REBELS

The Game: These programs have no history and sit on opposite ends of the state, but both have plenty at stake as the playoff race heats up. Liberty has responded to an 0-2 start by winning four straight under first-year head coach Jamie Newman, with the Raiders finding ways to win and improving each week. Ritchie County has also won four in a row and has continued its progress under head coach Jared Shipe after reaching the playoffs in 2025. Both teams have built momentum, and this matchup gives each a chance to strengthen its postseason position with a quality win.

Keys to the Game: Liberty's biggest question is the health of star QB [player_tooltip player_id='1221844' first='Jaxson' last='Workman'], who left last week's game with an injury. His availability remains uncertain, but [player_tooltip player_id='2267294' first='Chase' last='Shea'] filled in well and would have a full week to prepare if Workman can't go. The Raiders have to show they can get production from other players, and spreading the workload will help build depth regardless of who starts at quarterback. Ritchie County has won four straight in convincing fashion, but this is a chance for the Class A Rebels to prove they can handle an improved AA opponent. After a difficult start to the season, beating a quality team like Liberty would be a significant step forward.

Matchup to Watch: All eyes will be on Liberty's quarterback situation. Workman is a dual-threat with good size who can consistently pound defenses on the ground, but Shea has a similar build and style that could help the Raiders maintain their offensive identity if he starts. Ritchie County will need to account for the quarterback run game while also finding a way to handle Liberty's senior-dominated and big offensive line. If the Rebels can't hold up in the trenches, the Raiders could control the game with their ground attack. For Ritchie, competing up front will be essential to keeping this matchup competitive.

Score Prediction: Liberty 34 Ritchie County 20
