Rose's defense is greatly improved this season, and Gibbs' emergence at middle linebacker is a massive factor in that. He's a fiery player who's always moving at hyperspeed. He's quick, decisive, and plays way bigger than his size suggests. His natural linebacker instincts complicate his evaluation. His size and speed suggest a future at defensive back, but he plays linebacker like a long-time veteran. For now, we're content to sit back and let his play do the talking. The sophomore has thrived against the run despite a murderer's row of outstanding offensive line opponents on the schedule. He sheds blocks with ease and frequently disrupts the backfield. He's also flashed as a pass-rusher this year. He's taken over the room. He's taken on a workhorse role as a sophomore, with 15 carries and a reception per game. I really like his vision. Too many young running backs try to string together moves in the open field. Hairston's running style is simpler: he hits the hole, and then if there's open grass, he uses his speed to run that direction. That's led to plenty of chunk runs. He also put a ton of offseason weight room work in, and you can tell, as he's much stronger in the running game. He's a technician with excellent lateral movement skills and the improved physical traits to be a lockdown tackle at the next level. He's not the biggest safety, but he's as opportunistic a player as you'll find. He had multiple forced fumbles against Southeast Raleigh, one of which came on a pure strip.
