Harrison Helbig picked up right where he left off from a big junior season, leading University to a 35-3 win over Musselman with 284 yards passing, 68 yards rushing and four total touchdowns. The 2027 quarterback showed off more of his athleticism as a runner in Week 1, doing a good job escaping the pocket, extending plays and picking up chunk yardage when plays broke down. Helbig is not a true dual-threat, but his ability to scramble and make throws on the run gave the Musselman defense another element to account for alongside University's explosive passing attack. It was a strong start to his senior season, and another element of his game to look at that makes Helbig one of the top quarterbacks in the state.

The 2027 standout has established himself as one of the top receivers and defensive backs in the state, and he wasted no time showing that playmaking ability in week one. George also landed on our Week 1 Top Plays and is on the early short list for the Randy Moss Award and Carl Lee Award. This will be the first of plenty of big performances from George in 2026.

After a prolific freshman season, 2029 RB Jaden Black wasted no time showing he's still one of the most exciting young players in the state. Black totaled 223 yards and two touchdowns as a runner and receiver in George Washington's opening-night win over Spring Valley. His strength and contact balance immediately stood out, and Black consistently grinded out tough yards and made defenders work to bring him down. Those traits were already evident as a freshman and look even more impressive as he enters his sophomore season. If Week 1 is any indication, Black is in for another big year and should remain one of the top young players in Class AAAA.

His punt return touchdown landed on our Top Plays of the Week and was another example of the high-level playmaking ability Todd brings to the field. He showed the ability to impact the game at all three levels as a receiver, defensive back and returner, giving Martinsburg a dynamic weapon wherever they line him up. Todd has the talent to play at the P4 level, and it's a shame he hasn't received more FBS attention yet, but that should change this season.

2027 TE Preston Heatherington was a major factor in one of the better AAAA Week 1 matchups, helping Wheeling Park pull out a thrilling 28-21 win over Parkersburg South with 8 receptions for 106 yards and some great blocks. Heatherington will be heavily involved in a new-look Patriots offense that will lean on the passing game more than it has in recent seasons, and he immediately showed why he's one of the top tight ends in the class. I liked the creativity in how Wheeling Park used him, particularly from a wing alignment where they moved him across the formation as a blocker and hit him in the flats as a receiver with some timely throws up the seams. His physicality as a blocker also stood out, and he has clearly made strides in that area with an emphasis from the coaching staff to use him more in that aspect as a senior.

Rife finished with five receptions for 132 yards and a touchdown, while also taking a punt return to the house, making our Top Plays of the Week and flipping the momentum early in the second quarter. We expected Rife to have a big sophomore season after the playmaking ability he flashed as a freshman earned him a spot in the Top 5 of his class, and Week 1 backed that up. He'll be a go-to target for classmate Marek Midkiff in his first season at quarterback, and Rife's hands and ball skills give Huntington a dangerous young weapon to lean on.

The dual-threat senior showed off both sides of his game, making plays with his arm while also using his quickness and athleticism on the ground and when moving around the pocket. Dick looks like the best version of himself early in his senior season, and there is plenty of motivation after how last year ended. The competition gets much tougher against Bridgeport in Week 2, and Martinsburg will need Dick to maintain this level of play when the Bulldogs face a much tougher challenge.

The senior brings stability to the quarterback position after a big hole that needed to be filled from last year and looked comfortable in his first game with the program in a seamless transition. Milburn made throws all over the field and did a good job spreading the ball around to multiple receivers. After playing DE in the past, Cabell Midland is using Shelton at safety this season, and the Army commit looked very athletic in his new role. He moved extremely well for his size, showed impressive closing speed, and brought a physical presence when coming downhill as a tackler and as a blocker. The opening week of the West Virginia high school football season gave us plenty of standout performances across Class AAAA. From big plays to players who consistently made an impact throughout the night, Week 1 featured several performances that deserve recognition. Here are the players who earned recognition for their Week 1 performances with film or stats available.
Evaluations are normally subscriber-only but when an athlete subscribes, theirs becomes free for all readers.
Subscribing doesn't change who the Scout covers, it changes who gets to see it.
Hayden George was highly efficient in his Week 1 action, catching three passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns in just two quarters of work for University.

2 receptions 123 yards 1 touchdown 2028 WR Branden Custer made a big impact in University's opener, finishing with two receptions for 123 yards and a touchdown. Custer showed his big-play ability on a 95-yard catch-and-run that landed him on…
After a prolific freshman season, 2029 RB Jaden Black wasted no time showing he's still one of the most exciting young players in the state.

2027 ATH Javontae Wynes made the most of his touches in Woodrow Wilson's opening-night win over Washington, finishing with 112 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just six carries while adding a 46-yard touchdown reception. Wynes and Gage Burdette both had big nights out of the Flying Eagles' Wing-T backfield, consistently creating big plays and making quick work of the Patriot defense. Wynes has put in the work this offseason and enters his senior year in the best shape of his career, which should set him up for a big final season.

208 total yards - 3 touchdowns - Punt Return TD - 1 INT
Boston Todd needed just one half to make a major impact in Martinsburg's opening-night win over Hedgesville, totaling 208 yards, three touchdowns that included a punt return score and an interception before the Bulldogs took a 74-0 lead into halftime.

5 receptions 132 yards 1 TD - Punt Return Touchdown
Huntington suffered a tough Week 1 loss to George Rogers Clark, but 2029 WR Kellen Rife was a clear bright spot for the Highlanders.

2027 Martinsburg QB/ATH Brian Dick needed just one half to make a statement in the Bulldogs' opener, going 7/7 for 194 yards and three touchdowns while adding two rushing scores against an overmatched Hedgesville team.

11/18 193 yards 2 touchdowns 2027 Spring Mills QB Chaz Milburn had a strong debut for the Cardinals after transferring in from Hedgesville, completing 11/18 passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns in the opener. The senior brings stability to…
2027 Cabell Midland TE/ATH Keian Shelton made his presence felt all over the field in the Knights' 41-6 win over Oak Hill, picking off two passes, including a pick-6, blocking a kick, and multiple receptions on offense. After playing DE in the past, Cabell Midland is using Shelton at safety this season, and the Army commit looked very athletic in his new role. He moved extremely well for his size, showed impressive closing speed, and brought a physical presence when coming downhill as a tackler and as a blocker. Shelton also made his share of plays at receiver, giving the Knights a major mismatch on offense at wideout. It looks like it could be a big senior season for Shelton, who had an eye-opening Week 1 performance.

16 carries 147 yards 1 TD 2027 Parkersburg South RB Kooper Jackson was excellent in the Patriots' 28-21 loss to Wheeling Park, carrying the ball 16 times for 147 yards and a touchdown. Jackson has been a player I've been…
