The Bump, Week 3, Instant Ranking Updates Across My Travels

For the first time in more than seven years of ranking high school football prospects, I am changing the way I handle in season rankings in Pennsylvania.

Typically, my rankings are updated three or four times throughout the year. When those updates happen, I go through the entire class. That means hundreds, and in some cases thousands, of prospects are evaluated, moved, added, removed, or reconsidered at the same time. It has always been a large scale process with plenty of time between each official update.

That changes this fall, every week throughout the Pennsylvania high school football season, I will be making official ranking changes based on what I see.

I want to be very clear about the word official, these are not watch list additions. These are not projections for the next rankings update. These are not players I am telling readers to remember a few months from now. If a prospect appears in this article with a ranking change, his ranking on Prep Redzone Pennsylvania is changing.

There is also no required number of prospects that I need to include each week. I am not going to force movement just to fill an article. One week there might be one player. Another week there might be five. There could be 15 if that is what the weekend calls for.

The entire point of this series is accountability. I rank several thousand high school football prospects, and I am going to be wrong about some of them. There will be players I ranked too low. There will be players I left outside the rankings who should have been included. There will be prospects whose development happened faster than I anticipated. There will be players who look completely different from the last time I evaluated them.

When I see it, I am not waiting months to fix it.

If I am standing on a sideline on Friday night and a player proves that my evaluation of him is outdated, I want his ranking to reflect that. If I turn on the film Saturday morning and realize I missed on a prospect, I want to correct it. If a player forces his way onto my radar with his performance, I am not going to make him wait until the next massive class update simply because that is how I have traditionally done things.

For more than seven years, I have never handled rankings this way, I will do so moving forward

This will be a weekly running correction of my Pennsylvania rankings throughout the season. It will be based on live evaluations, film, development, production, physical growth, positional projection, and anything else that forces me to reconsider where a prospect belongs. Some changes will be significant. Some will be smaller. Some players will enter the rankings for the first time. Others could make substantial jumps after showing that their previous ranking no longer represents the player they are today.

There is no quota and there are no automatic changes.

These are official Prep Redzone Pennsylvania ranking updates, effective when they are published.

Any questions about the rankings, an evaluation, or a prospect I need to see can be sent directly to me at vic@prepredzone.com.

State-wide ranking updates will still happen naturally after the season.
 <!-- wp:acf/table-import
