KY ‘28 Position Rankings Breakdowns: WR/TE

Last month, we wrapped up our latest rankings update cycle with our updated Top 150 for the class of 2028 in the state of Kentucky. With that in mind, I will be taking some time to continue breaking these rankings down by position. After already covering the quarterbacks and running backs, here are our top wide receivers/tight ends in the class.   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Wide Receivers:</h2>     [player_tooltip player_id='871291' first='Avery' last='Thompson'] is one of the best players in the state, regardless of class. He is off to a strong start to his junior year as he currently leads 4A in receiving with 33 catches for 491 yards and eight touchdowns through five games. Thompson is a very reliable jump ball target as he is able to use his athleticism to his advantage to out jump opposing defensive backs to attack passes at their highest point. He has also shown the ability to use his speed and smooth breaks in his routes to create easy separation. Avery has also scored one rushing touchdown this season. Thompson currently holds a long list of Power 4 offers and I expect that list to continue to grow moving forward.     [player_tooltip player_id='2136575' first='Kingston' last='Dillard'] is a player who has made a true impact since his freshman year. He is off to another impressive season so far, leading his team in receiving with 28 receptions for 238 yards and three touchdowns in four games. Dillard has explosive deep which he uses to blow by opposing defensive backs with ease to create separation. He is also dangerous after the catch, using his speed and elusiveness to turn short passes into big gains on a regular basis. Kingston currently holds offers from Western Kentucky, Miami (OH), Kent State, Troy, and Kentucky Wesleyan, and I expect offers to keep piling up for him over the next couple years.     [player_tooltip player_id='1907206' first='Jakari' last='Matchem'] is picking up right where he left off after a strong sophomore season. Through five games this year, he leads his team in receiving with 30 catches for 494 yards and four touchdowns, which is also second in 6A. He is a very reliable deep threat as he has shown the speed to blow by opposing defensive backs with ease along with the athleticism to attack passes at their highest point in jump ball situations. Jakari is also impressive after the catch, showing the strength to break tackles in the open field and speed to pick up extra yards in a hurry. He has also scored three rushing touchdowns this season. Matchem holds offers from Austin Peay State, Eastern Kentucky, and Murray State, and I wouldn't be surprised to see more come his way soon.     [player_tooltip player_id='1240849' first='Jude' last='Lanier'] is another talented McCracken County wide receiver who has caught our attention. He is off to a strong start to his junior year, hauling in 17 passes for 370 yards and five touchdowns in four games. Jude is a skilled route runner, using smooth breaks in his routes to create separation from opposing defensive backs. He has also shown the speed to pose as a deep threat and to pick up yards after the catch. Lanier holds offers from Memphis, Nicholls State, Murray State, Miami (OH), and UT-Martin, and I expect more to come his way over the next two years.     To wrap up our top five receivers in the class of 2028 in the state of Kentucky, I have [player_tooltip player_id='1743736' first='Chi' last='Poynter']. Chi has had an impressive junior year so far, catching 29 passes for 549 yards and three touchdowns in five games, which leads his team, and puts him at 2nd in 3A and 3rd in the entire state in receiving. Poynter is a long, athletic receiver who uses his high catch radius and strong hands to his advantage to come away with catches in traffic with ease. He has also shown the speed to pick up extra yards after the catch. Chi has also scored two rushing touchdowns this season and has come away with three interceptions on defense, returning one of them for a touchdown. Poynter currently holds offers from Cincinnati, Eastern Kentucky, and West Georgia, and I expect offers to continue piling up for him over the next two seasons.    <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tight Ends:</h2>     [player_tooltip player_id='952775' first='Jayvion' last='Fullwood'] has stood out as the top tight end in his class. He is very reliable in the passing game, especially in jump ball situations. Fullwood uses his big frame and athleticism to attack the ball at its highest point to make catches over opposing defensive backs. He has also shown the speed to pose as a deep threat. In five games this season, Jayvion has caught eight passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns. He has also recorded 11 tackles, one tackle for loss, and two sacks on defense. Jayvion will definitely be a player worth keeping an eye on over the next couple seasons.     [player_tooltip player_id='871292' first='Lukas' last='Olmstead'] has been on our radar for a while now and has continued to stand out this season. He has played a key role in the Knox Central passing game, catching five passes for 102 yards and a touchdown in four games. Olmstead is a reliable deep threat down the seam, using his speed to create easy separation. He has also shown the ability to get up the field quickly after the catch to pick up extra yards. Lukas is a player who college coaches should start to keep an eye on this season.     Our third and final tight end in our updated Top 150 in the class of 2028 in the state of Kentucky is [player_tooltip player_id='2141855' first='Ben' last='Sturgeon']. I really like what I've seen from Ben as a blocker as he does a great job of picking up blocks in space then using his strength to drive them out of the picture with ease. He has also proven to be a reliable target in the passing game, using his speed and smooth breaks in his routes to create separation from opposing defenders. Sturgeon has caught three passes for 56 yards through four games this season. Ben recently picked up his first offer from Kent State and I can see more coming his way throughout the next two seasons.
