Freshman Friday: 2026 Ep. 5

Welcome back to Episode 5 of Freshman Friday, where we highlight some of the top freshmen in the state. In just five weeks, we've gone from a 64-player watchlist to over 85 players, many of whom will debut in our first Class of 2030 rankings next month. Here, we have five scouting reports to share. While most of these guys have made an impact at the varsity level, we may have a player or two with potential too big to ignore.   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Freshman Friday: Five Class of 2030 Players To Watch</h2>   Editor's Note: While I like to organize recurring articles, part of the fun of Freshman Friday is the randomness. I'm not looking at any one position, and I hardly have any method for deciding which players to feature. We have 64 players on our initial watchlist, and that group will only grow throughout the season.   <a href="https://prepredzone.com/2026/08/freshman-friday-2026-ep-1/">Episode 1</a> <a href="https://prepredzone.com/2026/08/freshman-friday-2026-ep-2/">Episode 2</a> <a href="https://prepredzone.com/2026/09/freshman-friday-2026-ep-3/">Episode 3</a> <a href="https://prepredzone.com/2026/09/freshman-friday-2026-episode-4/">Episode 4</a>    One of three standout freshmen in Charlotte Christian's receiver room, Dallas is a shifty slot receiver with some speed. He went from playing late in blowouts to earning a small role in the rotation. He has great feel against zone coverage, able to feel defenders as he gets out of his breaks to find the soft spot in the defense.     On a defense like Middle Creek's, just cracking the rotation is an accomplishment. But Turner has done far more than that so far this season. His tape against 7A Garner is really impressive, as he made play after play in the running game. He plays sideline to sideline, and he's a textbook tackler. I like his length, and I think that should serve him well as both a blitzer and in coverage.     Cockerham is a guy we heard a lot about from our middle school scouts, and so far, he's carved out a nice role defensively for Reynolds. The coaching staff trusts him enough to put him on an island, often to the field side. He's impressed early as an open-field tackler, and while he's not yet an every-down guy, he hasn't made many mistakes, and his early play suggests that he'll be a top corner in the 2030 class.     Hargrave is playing both ways for a young North Stokes team, and his early-season tape is promising. At this point, offensive tackle is his best position, and he's thriving as a right tackle. I've been impressed with his ability to pick up blitzes and to get out in space on screens and outside runs. He's athletic enough to get to linebackers at the second level and strong enough to take on bigger defensive ends.     Giles is thriving on Providence's Junior Varsity team, and he's definitely a guy to know for the future. A true dual-threat quarterback, Giles actually worked out with the high schoolers at our Prep Redzone Exposure Camp in May. He earned a June offer from Eastern Kentucky, a school that has a good track record of identifying top prospects early. There's no rush to see him perform at the varsity level, but we're already following his career closely.    Which other freshmen need to be on our radar?
