Walker Reid Jamboree Standout Players

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Six teams were in action this past Saturday evening at Ashbrook High School in Gastonia, North Carolina for the first annual Walker Reid Jamboree. This event honors former Gastonia mayor Walker Reid, who did a lot for the city during his tenure. In action were Bunker Hill, Hunter Huss, Mountain Island, Bessemer City, James Island (SC) and Ashbrook. We'll give a brief synopsis of the matchups and highlight a player who stood out from each team. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Hunter Huss 14 Bunker Hill 0</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Hunter Huss scored off a Pick 6 and a nice touchdown pass on a fade route for the final margin in this 2 quarter matchup. Overall I think Hunter Huss looks athletic and quick in the skill positions, and if they can matchup with teams of similar size physically, they can hold their own. Bunker Hill was more effective in stopping the run on defense and making a few plays with the passing game on offense. He has a strong arm, and he hit a couple of big plays downfield offensively. Expect Obrian to be an impact player all season long for the Huskies on both sides of the ball. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- /wp:acf/evaluation-block --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Mountain Island 0 Bessemer City 0 </strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>In the middle matchup of the jamboree, these two teams played lights out defense and kept each other from even reaching the red zone, much less putting up any points on the scoreboard in their matchup. I think both teams are working on who they're going to become offensively. Mountain Island with a new offensive coordinator, and Bessemer City with a new head coach, it makes sense that both defenses are ahead of the offenses at this point in the season. There were a couple of 3rd and long trap plays that the Raptors ran that featured him, and he was able to make some big yardage happen in the open field. But when you just look at how explosive he is off the line of scrimmage, he tilts a defense and can open some other things for teammates. CJ made a couple of nice catches with some run-after-catch ability, and I expect him to have a big season overall. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- /wp:acf/evaluation-block --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>James Island 35 Ashbrook 20 </strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>In the final game of the jamboree, James Island from the Charleston area of South Carolina looked every bit of the state semi-finalist they were last season, jumping out to a 14-0 lead after one quarter of action. They are big up front on the offensive line, have explosive skill players, and they are very fast on the defensive line. Ashbrook did settle in and get some things going offensively, and they showed they still have some talent from a 4th round team last season that lost a lot to graduation. Brady looked comfortable and in control in running the James Island offense. He had a nice touchdown run off of a jet sweep counter play that was beautifully executed. He broke a tackle on the play also. Brady hit some nice passes as well, including a touchdown pass he threw while under pressure.
