Marshall 60-8 Oct. 3rd - Beat Noble 63-20 Oct. 10th - Beat El Reno 42-0 Oct. 16th - Beat Western Heights 56-0 Oct. 25th - Beat Altus 41-35 (OT) Oct. 31st - Lost To Carl Albert 47-42 Nov. 7th - Beat Lawton 65-20 1st Round - Lost To Bishop McGuinness 42-35   2025 Offensive Scoring Average: 46.2 Points Per Game 2025 Defensive Scoring Average: 20.6 Points Per Game   The Guthrie Blue Jays came into the 2025 season with plenty of momentum after making a run to the 2024 Class 5A state championship game. They were firmly a top ten team in Class 5A heading into the 2025 season and they played like one throughout the year. They dropped a tough game to eventual 4A state champion Tuttle in the season opener. Then they ripped off a seven game winning streak. In the first six wins during that streak, they won every game by 30+ points. They had a Saturday afternoon showdown that went to overtime against Altus but they won that to set up a Halloween night match-up with top-ranked Carl Albert. The Titans escaped and beat the Blue Jays in the final minute, winning 47-42. Guthrie bounced back with a 45-point win in the regular season finale to finish the regular season at 8-2. Guthrie had a first round showdown with former district rival Bishop McGuinness in the first round of the playoffs but came up short, falling 42-35 and just like that, the season came to an end at 8-3. Guthrie's three losses in 2025 came to the teams that won the 5A and 4A state championships and to a team that played for the 5A gold ball. While they fell short of making it back to Edmond, the Blue Jays found a way to make plenty of noise and play as one of the best teams in 5A from start to finish.   2026 OUTLOOK   Guthrie comes into this season looking to be one of the top teams in Class 5A but this is a class that has been headlined by one team (Carl Albert) for a decade now and the depth of this class just keeps getting deeper and deeper. But the Blue Jays should be right in the mix when the playoffs roll around. They bring back six starters on the offensive side of the ball. It will all start with the quarterback position as Guthrie brings back a three-year starter at quarterback. That will help some of the new faces on that side of the ball. They do need to find some new faces quickly on the offensive line and at certain skill spots. But this was an offense that averaged over 45 points per game. The fact that they bring back the majority of their offensive starters is a very good thing. Defensively, the Blue Jays also bring back six starters and it will be a similar situation where Guthrie will be a work in progress early on but they'll lean on that returning experience to set the tone while they bring in those new names. Now, the 2026 schedule will be a more challenging one this season. There's no time to “ease into” the season with the first half of Guthrie's schedule. It will be baptism by fire for the Blue Jays but if they hit the halfway mark of the season at 3-2 or better, they will be in a very good position going into the month of October and beyond. They made a run at the 5A title two years ago, they expect to do it again this fall.    KEY LOSSES TO GRADUATION   Cooper Walters - Offensive Lineman Kellen Hirzel - Linebacker Zane Thomas - Running Back (2025 All State Honorable Mention)   PLAYERS TO WATCH    2027 quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1706912' first='Daelon' last='Rice'] comes into this season as one of the more experienced quarterbacks in Class 5A football. He'll be a three-year starter for the Blue Jays and looks to lead Guthrie back to the Class 5A state championship this fall. He did it once as a sophomore and then led a high-powered offense last year as a junior. Rice now looks to close out his high school career by taking Guthrie back to the top of 5A football. There might be question marks elsewhere on the Guthrie offense with new starters emerging but there are no question marks about the quarterback position.   (2025 All State Honorable Mention)     2028 defensive standout [player_tooltip player_id='1834703' first='Gabe' last='Jackson'] is a prospect we're fired up to watch this season. Whether he's lined up as an outside linebacker or an edge rusher on the line of scrimmage, Jackson has the potential to have a breakout season for the Blue Jays on defense. Guthrie needs some new players to emerge as legit pass rushers and guys that can cause chaos in the backfield. Jackson showed flashes last season that he could be that guy. Now, as he enters his junior season, Jackson will look to emerge not only for the Guthrie defense but as a breakout star in 5A football.     One of the biggest question marks for Guthrie coming into this season is on both sides of the line of scrimmage. They need new faces to step up on the offensive and defensive lines. 2027 OL/DL [player_tooltip player_id='2264588' first='Sir' last='William Morgan'] is one of the players that Guthrie expects to step up in a major way this fall. He's a name that returns on the line of scrimmage and goes into his senior season expecting to have a bigger role with the Blue Jays. Guthrie is going to rely on Morgan as a leader and a guy that can help bring those young names along. Morgan will be important to both sides of the ball.     The Blue Jays come into this season needing some new names to step up in the skill departments. 2027 wide receiver and defensive back Skylor Scamman is one of the names that could do just that in 2026. With Rice returning for his third season as QB1 of the Blue Jays, he's going to be in control of the offense. If Scamman comes along quickly and turns into that playmaker that the Blue Jays can rely on, they will be in good shape. But like we mentioned earlier in the preview, there's no time for “easing in” when it comes to this schedule. Scamman and company have to come out swinging.    MORE NAMES TO KNOW   Braden Smith - 2028 Athlete Codie Carlock - 2027 Running Back/Defensive Back Collin Walters - 2029 Running Back/Linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1828326' first='Dereon' last='Whitehorn'] - 2027 Running Back/Defensive Back Meech Thomas - 2029 Athlete Qorrie Carlock - 2027 Defensive Lineman   2026 SCHEDULE   Aug. 28th - AT Tuttle - Guthrie opens the 2026 season against the defending 4A state champions from Tuttle. These two teams have met in non-district play in each of the last four seasons. Guthrie won the first two match-ups but Tuttle has won the last two. This is a hard-hitting series that has also featured some late game heroics in the last few years. Sept. 4th - Elgin - The home opener comes in week one as the Blue Jays go from playing the defending 4A champs to the 4A Runner Ups from a year ago. They host an Elgin team that is back in Class 5A after making it to the 4A title game the last two years. The only other time these two played was in 2022. Guthrie beat the Owls in the first round of the playoffs. Sept. 11th - AT Bethany - The Blue Jays go back on the road in week two when they face Bethany and this will be the first match-up between these two teams. And when you look at both teams over the last decade, there are a lot of similarities between the two. They are routinely playoff teams, year after year and they've had years where they've made deep runs. Sept. 18th - Blanchard - The non-district slate wraps up in week three with a home game against Blanchard. These two teams have met in non-district play in each of the last two seasons. Blanchard won a competitive game in 2024 but the Blue Jays absolutely dominated last year's meeting. They beat the Lions 48-7 last year and Blanchard will have a new head coach this fall. Sept. 25th - AT Carl Albert - It doesn't get tougher for a district opener than this with Guthrie going on the road to face Carl Albert in week four. The Blue Jays are looking for their first win over the Titans in over a decade. They've been very close in the last several years but Carl Albert has found ways to escape. The district title could also be decided right here in week four.  Oct. 2nd - Midwest City - Guthrie hits the halfway mark of the regular season and the schedule does start to lighten up after playing some heavy hitters in the first half of the season. They host Midwest City in week five. And this will actually be the first meeting between these two teams. Not only are the Bombers a new district opponent but they are a new opponent in general. Oct. 9th - AT Lawton - The Blue Jays fly south to face Lawton in week six. The Wolverines became district opponents for Guthrie in 2024 and this has been a series that the Blue Jays have dominated. They won the first meeting with ease and followed that up with a 45-point win over the Wolverines last year. But Lawton comes into this season expecting to be much improved. Oct. 23rd - Noble - After a week off, Guthrie returns to the field with a home game against Noble in week eight. These two teams started facing off in district play in 2024 and the series has been one-sided. Guthrie won 41-14 in 2024 and followed that up with a 40+ point win last year. But Noble does have some new offensive firepower heading into this season. Oct. 30th - AT Durant - In week nine, the Blue Jays fly south again, this time to face Durant. The Lions are a new district opponent for the Blue Jays as they've been in an east side district for a while now. In fact, it's been 15 years since these two teams went head to head on the gridiron. They met in the playoffs in 2010 and 2011 and Guthrie won both meetings. Nov. 6th - Duncan - The regular season comes to an end with a home game against Duncan in week ten. The Blue Jays are very familiar with the Demons after playing them in non-district play in each of the last six seasons. And Guthrie has been absolutely dominant in this series, winning seven straight, including their 42-10 win over the Demons last season.    NOTABLE   It's never easy to replace a legend but head coach Kelly Beeby has made it look easy. Beeby took over in 2014, replacing Rafe Watkins after Watkins won more than 100 games and four state championships in 2002, 2007, 2011 and 2013. The torch was passed to Beeby, who was the defensive coordinator for the Blue Jays. And he has kept Guthrie as a consistent playoff team and he's closing in on a coaching milestone. Beeby comes into the 2026 football season with 94 wins as Guthrie's head coach. Unless things go terribly wrong, he should hit number 100 this season. But there's no doubt that there's another check box that he is hungry to check. Guthrie hasn't won a state championship since beating McAlester by 30 points in 2013. The Blue Jays got close with an unpredictable run to the title game in 2024.
