You could make the argument that they had one of their better teams in recent memory but things were a struggle from start to finish. The Wolves were bitten hard by the injury bug and they played in one of the more competitive and frankly chaotic districts in the state. Shawnee would start the season with a 1-2 record after non-district play. They would bounce back with wins over East Central and Booker T Washington. The Booker T Washington win was the one crazy win looking back because the Hornets went on to beat Coweta, who was the district champion. The Wolves were 3-2 at the halfway mark of the regular season but they would drop four of their next five games, including two games by a total of seven points. They were on the outside looking in on the playoffs and finished the regular season with a 4-6 record. Overall, they went 1-3 in those one score games. They actually outscored their opponents on the season, averaging nearly 29 points per game and giving up less than 25 points per game. It was a tough way to end the season but there are still reasons to be positive. This is a program that as a whole is building some momentum. And things are going to look pretty different when they take the field in 2026.   2026 OUTLOOK   The Wolves come into this season needing to replace the majority of their starters from last year but because they were bitten by the injury bug, they do have players that have starting experience that weren't “full time” starters. Shawnee brings back three starters from last year's offense but the biggest hole to fill will be on the offensive line. They have to replace two starters that are now on campuses of P4 programs. That's not an easy thing but the Wolves are confident with the group that is coming up. The Wolves have some very productive skill players returning at running back and wide receiver, along with a promising quarterback that got his feet wet last year because of injuries. Defensively, the Wolves bring back four starters from last year's team and the returning talent is spread out at all three levels. Those guys are going to be able to help the new guys along quickly. Now, we mentioned things were going to look different. Shawnee has gone from an east side district team to the west side for the next two seasons. In fact, nine of their ten regular season games this season will be different opponents from last season. So there's a lot of unknown for Shawnee, both on the field and on the schedule. But the Wolves appear to be ready for the challenge to make a run in Class 5A this season.   KEY LOSSES TO GRADUATION   Ja'Qwon Evans - Offensive Lineman (2025 All State 3rd Team Selection) Kaden Bramlage - Offensive Lineman (2025 All State Honorable Mention)   PLAYERS TO WATCH    We mentioned earlier in the preview how the Wolves have to replace two P4 offensive linemen and that might be the big question mark area heading into this season. 2028 offensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='1829603' first='Boston' last='Stripling'] is an up and coming prospect that has a lot of momentum going for him with the season right around the corner. He might have flown under the radar because of the other monsters they've had on the offensive line. But Stripling appears to be one of Shawnee's next top guys on the line of scrimmage. He's had a terrific offseason and specifically summer, getting on college's radars.     We think that 2028 wide receiver and cornerback [player_tooltip player_id='1829599' first='Brendan' last='Johnson'] is a star in the making. He's a hidden gem that feels primed for a breakout season this fall. We've gotten the chance to see Johnson a couple times this offseason and each time, we walk away with the same impression. He's a playmaker and it doesn't matter if it's on offense or defense. Offensively, he's a long receiver that has a catch radius that is very difficult to defend in a one on one situation. Defensively, Johnson is a lockdown corner that can come up and hit you like a safety moving downhill.      The strength of this Shawnee defense is going to start on the line of scrimmage. 2027 defensive tackle [player_tooltip player_id='1262598' first='Logan' last='Skelton'] returns for his fourth season as a starter on the Shawnee defense. There aren't going to be many players that Shawnee faces that will have more game experience than Skelton. He's an absolute force in the middle of the Shawnee defense and has the ability to terrorize the opponent on the line of scrimmage. He's your prototypical defensive tackle or nose guard. Even when he isn't making the play, he's opening the door for another Shawnee defender to do just that.     2027 linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1844069' first='Nolan' last='Ward'] was one of the first names mentioned to us this offseason when it came to Shawnee's defense. There are several standouts to keep an eye on but Ward will do most of his damage from the linebacker position. He's a tackling machine and the Wolves have had a few of those come through the program over the last several years. It looks like Ward is the next guy on that list and it's going to be fun to see how big of a step up he takes this season. Ward has the potential to be the leading tackler this season on a defense full of absolute animals.      Similar to Johnson, we got the same “playmaker” vibes from 2027 wide receiver and defensive back [player_tooltip player_id='1832403' first='Rahmel' last='Slaughter-Bey'] and there's no doubt that he fits that billing when you look at his body of work. We've lost track of how many different positions he's played over the last several seasons. It seems like no matter where he lines up on the field, offense or defense, he has the potential to be the best player on that football field. Now, he's looking to elevate his game to new heights and be one of the reasons why the Wolves are able to make it back to the playoffs this season.      2028 running back and hybrid defender [player_tooltip player_id='1829609' first='Riley' last='Storie'] was one of Shawnee's breakout stars last season. Storie might have been flying under the radar on a Shawnee roster that had a lot of upperclassmen talent. But as a sophomore, he emerged as their top weapon in the running game, finishing the season with over 1,000 yards. He turned around and was lights out on the defensive side of the ball. He was the district defensive lineman of the year and was incredibly productive. He's also the prototypical “tweener” on defense where he's just as dangerous at linebacker.      We mentioned earlier in the preview how the Wolves had to put in some young players last season because of injuries to starters. 2028 quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1838652' first='Tal' last='Leone'] was one of those players. In the final few weeks of the season, Leone emerged as QB1 of the Wolves and would do a decent job directing the offense. But the truth is Leone was thrown in the fire and that wasn't the plan in 2025. But now, he has legitimate starting experience under the Friday night lights and more importantly, he has had a full offseason knowing that he's the guy at QB1 for the Wolves and that should help them in 2026.    MORE NAMES TO KNOW   Aiden Kennedy - 2029 Running Back [player_tooltip player_id='1265960' first='Drake' last='Estala'] - 2028 Wide Receiver [player_tooltip player_id='1830966' first='Jayce' last='Bullock'] - 2027 Defensive Lineman [player_tooltip player_id='1830359' first='Weston' last='Setzer'] - 2027 Defensive Back   2026 SCHEDULE   Aug. 28th - AT Elk City - The 2026 season kicks off with a trip out to western Oklahoma as the Wolves will square off with Elk City in week zero. We mentioned earlier in the preview how nine of the ten opponents were different from last year. This match-up is a great example of that as these two teams have never faced off on the gridiron before but that changes in 2026. Sept. 4th - AT Putnam City North - Shawnee goes back on the road to face Putnam City North in week one and the Panthers are the one opponent on this year's schedule that Shawnee played last season. These two have met in non-district play in each of the last two seasons. Putnam City North won the first meeting but Shawnee beat the Panthers 32-19 last season.  Sept. 11th - Ponca City - Shawnee's home opener comes in week two against Ponca City and this will be the first meeting between these two teams since 2019. They were frequent opponents, whether it was in district or non-district action in the 2010's. It was also a back and forth series during that decade, with Shawnee holding a 4-3 advantage in seven meetings. Sept. 18th - Bethany - The Wolves wrap up non-district play with a home game against Bethany in week four. This is another new opponent on the schedule as this year's meeting will be the first between these two programs. Bethany has been a consistent winner and playoff team in Class 4A so this will be a challenging match-up right before district play begins. Sept. 25th - Newcastle - Shawnee jumps right into district play against one of their toughest opponents on the schedule. Newcastle comes to town and all the Racers have done in their first two seasons in Class 5A have been to make the semifinals each year. This will be another first time match-up between these two programs to kick off district play.  Oct. 2nd - AT Southeast - After three straight home games, Shawnee goes back on the road in week five to face Southeast. The last time the Wolves were in a west side district, it was a district with Southeast. They met in 2022 and 2023 and split that series. Both teams enjoyed blowout victories. The Spartans will look very different after losing their head coach and several star players. Oct. 9th - El Reno - Shawnee hosts El Reno in week six and we didn't believe this when we first read it but this will actually be the first meeting between these two programs in two decades. They met in 2004 and 2005 and the Wolves won both meetings. Both teams feel like 5A programs knocking on the door of getting back to consistent relevancy in Class 5A. Oct. 16th - AT Altus - Shawnee goes back on the road, this time to southwestern Oklahoma to face Altus and it's another new regular season opponent for the Wolves. They played Altus twice in the 2000's but both meetings were in the playoffs. Shawnee went 2-0 against the Bulldogs in those meetings. Altus will come into this season with a first year head coach. Oct. 30th - Lawton MacArthur - After a week off, Shawnee's playoff push goes into overdrive as they host Lawton MacArthur in week nine. The Highlanders made the semifinals last season after winning the district championship. Shawnee has played Lawton Mac twice in their history and both came in the playoffs in the 2000's. Their last state title win in 2003 was against Lawton Mac. Nov. 6th - AT Elgin - The regular season comes to an end with a week ten trip to southwestern Oklahoma to face Elgin. The Owls are back in Class 5A after dominating Class 4A the last two seasons. They've also won 30 consecutive regular season games coming into this season. This will be the first ever match-up between these two programs.    NOTABLE   We said it earlier in the preview but we do believe that the path back to the 5A playoffs is an easier one on the west side of the state right now. The two districts on the east side are absolutely loaded with teams that are capable of making it to the playoffs. There will be some good teams that are on the outside looking in from the two east side districts. But when you look at the history of Shawnee football, it is interesting to see how often the Wolves have gone back and forth. Geographically, they are fairly central and perhaps leaning a little east. But every two years, when the districts are redone, Shawnee is just passed back and forth from east to west. In 2022 and 2023, they were on the west side. The two years before that, they were in east side districts. For the majority of the 2010's, they were in the same district but they were also bouncing up and down from the old 32-team 6A to 5A to 6A-2. For the Wolves, they have an opportunity to make it back to the playoffs. The road might be easier, but that doesn't mean it'll be easy.
