Freshman Friday 2026 Ep. 1

Welcome back to Freshman Friday, a feature I started last season and wanted to continue in 2026. There are plenty of talented young players across the state, and in this weekly feature, we're breaking a few of them down. Nothing crazy, just good, old-fashioned scouting reports on five freshmen every week. Here's our first Freshman Friday episode of the 2026 season.   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Freshman Friday: Five Class of 2030 Players To Watch</h2>   Editor's Note: While I like to organize recurring articles, part of the fun of Freshman Friday is the randomness. I'm not looking at any one position, and I hardly have any method for deciding which players to feature. We have 64 players on our initial watchlist, and that group will only grow throughout the season.    Melton probably won't play many snaps on Fridays this season, but he's listed on Hough's varsity roster and has the upside to compete. He's a versatile defender, spending most of his time at safety. He'll likely grow a few more inches over the next few years, and given his build, hips, and footwork, I wonder if he'll work some at corner, too. Given Hough's track record for producing quality defensive backs, Melton should continue to develop and come closer to reaching his ceiling.     Jaime is a lengthy, versatile safety with plenty of range. He's one of those rare guys you can tell is going to be an elite defensive back prospect just from watching a workout. He has length, speed, ball skills, and a fearlessness that doesn't usually come in freshmen. Southeast Raleigh is loaded, but I'm not sure how they'd be able to keep him off the field.     I think Corvian's done it again. The program with two nationally-ranked senior linemen and a rising sophomore with multiple FBS offers is home to Jeffries, a 6-5 freshman edge rusher who doesn't look like a 2030 prospect. He's already working on his footwork and bend, and with his length, he could be an elite pass rusher. There's no reason for Corvian to rush his development, but in a year or two, he could be named among the top pass rushers in not just the state, but the entire country.     While I have my hands full covering the high school ranks and typically don't give a ton of thought to middle school prospects, Jenkins was the exception. I've followed his performance and development for years, and I'm glad he's finally old enough to get consistent coverage on the high school site. If you didn't know, you'd never guess that he's a freshman from his film, as he's big, poised, and has an absolute cannon for an arm.     Norwood already possesses college-level height and weight for the interior defensive line position. He has active hands and can go on dominant runs where he lives in the backfield. He's still growing into his body and learning how to use his strength to the best of his ability. That said, he's already flashed pass-rushing potential, and he'll have the opportunity to learn from some of the best in the state. Don't be surprised if Norwood sits near the top of the 2030 rankings for years to come.    Which other freshmen need to be on our radar?
