2026 Team Preview: Central Gwinnett Black Knights

In 2026, they'll navigate a lighter schedule up front and rely on a speedy defense to lead them into the field.   By the numbers...   <ul class="wp-block-list"> <li>Central Gwinnett returns their leaders in passing, rushing, receiving, interceptions, and fumble recoveries. </li> </ul>   <ul class="wp-block-list"> <li>In Central Gwinnett's four wins, they outscored opponents by an average margin of victory of 39.5.</li> </ul>   Offense    Joseph returns as the leading receiver and a 2 year starter for Central Gwinnett. He has been used primarily in the slot, but will be used more as a gadgety, versatile player as a senior. According to coaches, Joseph is the best deep threat on offense. He plays bigger than listed down the field, but his smooth pace and ability to tap into different gears as an athlete is what impresses me the most, which is why it makes sense that he will be used in different ways this fall.     This is Killings' second year in the system, and he really started to turn a corner in the last three games. His coaches hope that is the turning point in his development as he heads into year two as a starter. He is a long, loose athlete who is still raw in his delivery, but he can create in space as an athlete and has a long, whippy release. He is capable of becoming a late bloomer, especially if he truly takes another step forward.     Peal was an all-region player and rushed for over 800 yards last year, despite an injury that sidelined him later in the year. He was cleared this month, and will be back on the field this fall. This isn't my first look at Peal. I have always been impressed with his speed, and when you turn on the tape, it flashes. He is a big play threat from any spot on the field and is the X factor offensively for Central Gwinnett.     Benton is the second back to [player_tooltip player_id='1717544' first='Christian' last='Peal'], and he had a good year in his own right, rushing for over 500 yards as a junior. As put by the coaches, if [player_tooltip player_id='1717544' first='Christian' last='Peal'] is the lightning, they hope Benton, who is up to 180 pounds, can be the thunder. Expect a change-of-pace kind of role for Benton this fall.     Central Gwinnett lost 4 of their 5 starters on the offensive front from a year ago, which leaves [player_tooltip player_id='2256133' first='Ty' last='Zellar'] as the only leading returner on the offensive front. Simply put, if Central Gwinnett has a good year, it will be because Zellar stepped up as the anchor. Coaches need him to have a good year, so I will be paying attention here as the 2026 season unfolds.    Defense    Fox, committed to Cincy, returns as the team leader in tackles. He is versatile, violent, and the prospect on this team that everyone orbits around. He is big and aggressively drives on the ball. He will project best as a downhill chaser of the football from the safety spot, and the tackle production is what helps prove that to me.     Mills is a 4-year starter for Central Gwinnett who enters his senior year committed to Arkansas State. He is a true ball hawk, and coaches recognize him as the "brains" of the secondary. When I wrote about Mills earlier this summer, I recognized him as the X factor for this team, citing his versatility and aggressiveness in coverage, not just as a tackler. Hearing he is smart and a leader only validates that claim for me.     Clark is a tall, long football player who packed on weight this offseason and is expected to play a hybrid-style role for Central Gwinnett this fall. Traits-wise, there is plenty to get fired up about here. He is still packing on mass and moves well at 6'4. He is a run-and-chase defender as it stands today, but as he gets bigger, it is clear he will settle on the LOS as an EDGE prospect. Someone should take a flyer on this kid late in the cycle.     Perkinson is a bit overshadowed, but returns plenty of experience in the secondary with 3 years of starting experience under his belt. Even at 5'9, Perkinson will be the field corner for Central Gwinnett. You have to burn to be able to do that at his size, and he certainly does, running 10.8 in the 100M. He doubles as a kick returner, and that speed is sure to translate there.     Eshun has previously played safety in his career, but is making a move to MLB. There is a lot of speed on this defense, and Eshun provides some of that in the middle, as you could expect with his DB background. Coaches like his leadership in the middle of the defense, and praise his sideline-to-sideline speed.    Breakout Picks    Tower appeared in all 10 games for Central Gwinnett last year at corner, and he is looking to step into a starting role as a junior. There is still a lot to learn here, but from the looks of it, he has the tools to handle a starting role in stride. He is willing to come downhill and hit, which fits the culture of this Central Gwinnett defense.     Taylor has yet to walk the halls as a student in high school yet, but his coaches are already expecting him to come in and start as a freshman. He is a smaller receiver, but compensates with speed and playmaking ability. He already has the nickname "speedy", which should tell you all you need to know about what he is capable of and how he will be used.     Donald got most of his reps last year on special teams, and he is expected to be a major contributor as a returner in 2026. As a sophomore, coaches expect him to take a step forward and transform into a starter at receiver.     Emener is a pretty intriguing breakout pick by his coaches, and it's because of his size. He is a versatile player, but will settle long-term as a TE. He is expected to be a mismatch threat, and at 6'3, that is where his money will have to be made as a receiver.     As mentioned earlier, Central Gwinnett is having to replace practically the entire starting OL from a year ago. So, in steps Ford, who coaches say will take over at RT. They also believe, at least from a recruiting standpoint, that he has the chance to develop into the best OL prospect at Central Gwinnett in almost a decade. There's not much attention here, but that should change with more time and exposure.    2026 Outlook   It was an up-and-down 2025 for Central Gwinnett, flip-flopping wins and losses seemingly every week en route to a 4-5 season, narrowly missing the playoffs. A gauntlet of a schedule reared its head several times in 2025, including matchups against Lowndes, Collins Hill, Mill Creek, and Buford. In 2026, region play will be a battle, however, their out-of-region schedule is much lighter this time around, and there is legitimate runway to start 4-0.   Offensively, Central Gwinnett has to replace 4/5 starters on the offensive front, but they bring back a talented RB duo in [player_tooltip player_id='1717544' first='Christian' last='Peal'] and [player_tooltip player_id='574024' first='CJ' last='Benton']. Defensively, there is no shortage of speed, violence, and production. If Central Gwinnett wants to get back to the playoffs, they'll have to lean on their run game, toughness, and violence on defense.
