Building Iowa's Perfect Defensive Lineman – Class of 2027

Size and Frame:

[player_tooltip player_id='1361350' first='Abdul' last='Hodge Jr']. - Iowa City West

At 6-foot and 170 pounds, Hodge still has some room to fill out, but the Iowa legacy inherited excellent physical traits from his father. An FCS recruit, Hodge possesses excellent length for the cornerback position that, along with speed, allows him to recover if he gets beat. Hodge is about to extend his Go-Go-Gadget arms into the waiting hands of a receiver and pop the ball out.

Ball Skills:

[player_tooltip player_id='1906706' first='Grant' last='Whitcomb'] - Bishop Heelan

One of the top defensive backs in the state in terms of interceptions, Whitcomb finished the year with six picks this last season. Playing some wide receiver for the Crusaders, as well, Whitcomb's abilities translate to both sides of the football. He's able to haul in difficult passes both as a defensive back and as a wideout.

Speed:

Tay Seals - Clear Creak Amana

One of the elite track athletes in the state, Seals has the potential to run track at one of the top power programs in the country, if he'd like to. If not, his speed has clearly translated to what he can do on the football field, especially in coverage. Though he may be slight of frame at just 5-foot-10 and 145 pounds, Seals makes up for his lack of size with quickness that allows him to stay on the hip of opposing receivers and track down the ball in the air.

Press Coverage:

[player_tooltip player_id='1452144' first='Levi' last='Chulu'] - Dowling Catholic

More of a safety but a defensive back nonetheless, Chulu played nickel and slot corner in addition to serving as a high safety last season for Urbandale. Set to play for Dowling Catholic this coming fall, Chulu uses length and physicality at the line of scrimmage to get receivers off their spot. It takes a while for them to get into their routes, and Chulu effectively takes them out of the play.

Ranginess:

Griffin Glynn - Kuemper Catholic

Playing corner and wide receiver for the Knights, Glynn effectively plays multiple positions on defense, too. With the way he plays corner, particularly in zone coverage, he's asked to cover quite a bit of the field. Accepting that amount of responsibility, Glynn uses lateral speed and athleticism to cover his receiver, but also find the ball in the air if it's intended for another pass-catcher. Add in his sticky hands that give him a chance to grab a tipped pass, and Glynn is as rangy as they come.
