2029 Rankings Debut: The Top 10

With most of these prospects just beginning their high school careers, evaluations are based on a combination of freshman film, camp performances, live exposures, athletic traits, and long-term upside. At this stage, projection plays a large role, but there is already plenty of talent emerging throughout the state. These rankings are far from final and will continue to evolve as players gain experience, develop physically, and put more film out for evaluation. For now, this serves as our first look at the names we believe have positioned themselves among the top prospects in the Class of 2029.    EDGE [player_tooltip player_id='1716366' first='Tramel' last='Musgrove'] was the easy choice for the top spot in our debut 2029 rankings and already carries significant recruiting momentum heading into his sophomore season. After flashing exciting upside as a freshman at Capital, he heads to South Charleston as one of the most talented young prospects in the state. Musgrove already holds offers from WVU, Penn State, and NC State, among others, with plenty more expected to follow. The combination of athleticism, physical tools, and long-term upside gives him one of the highest ceilings in West Virginia, regardless of class. He is still early in his development, but all signs point toward Musgrove becoming a nationally recognized prospect over the next few years.      RB [player_tooltip player_id='1826125' first='Jaden' last='Black'] debuts in the 2029 rankings as the top running back in the class after a remarkable freshman season for George Washington. Black earned First Team All-State honors and was named our Offensive Freshman of the Year after rushing for more than 1,600 yards and 26 touchdowns. Production alone does not guarantee a high ranking, but the traits behind it were equally impressive. Black runs with excellent vision, has great contact balance for his age, and consistently finishes runs with a physical style. His durability and ability to handle a heavy workload at a young age were also encouraging signs. With three seasons remaining in his high school career, Black has already established himself as one of the premier prospects in West Virginia's 2029 class and looks well on his way toward becoming a legitimate D1 recruit.      No freshman in West Virginia made a stronger impression in the trenches than 2029 Cabell Midland OL [player_tooltip player_id='1563300' first='Grayson' last='Tilley']. Tilley earned a varsity starting role and went on to receive First Team All-MSAC honors, an impressive accomplishment for a player early in his career. Tilley already brings a strong combination of size, physicality, and athletic ability that gives him one of the highest ceilings among offensive linemen in the class. He plays with a nasty streak, finishes blocks, and consistently brings physicality to the point of attack. Tilley also moves well for his age and shows the athletic traits needed to continue developing into a high-level prospect. With three years of growth still ahead of him, he has the foundation to develop into a player with an FCS floor and FBS upside.      It did not take long for 2029 Huntington WR [player_tooltip player_id='1329943' first='Kellen' last='Rife'] to establish himself as one of the top young playmakers in West Virginia. Rife flashed on both the varsity and JV levels as a freshman for the Highlanders, and looks poised for a breakout sophomore season. I also got to see him compete this spring at a 7v7 event, where he stood out against quality out-of-state competition and left a strong impression. The physical tools and ability are there, but what really separates him is the feeling that he has the "it" factor that many top players possess. If his development continues on its current trajectory, Rife has a chance to become a household name in the state over the next few years.      2029 QB [player_tooltip player_id='1716405' first='Lionel' last='Dorsey'] highlights what appears to be another loaded young class for Martinsburg, a program that shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Dorsey flashed high-level potential on the Bulldogs' freshman squad and looks like the next quarterback in line to carry on the tradition of strong play at the position. What stands out early is his true dual-threat ability, as he can create dynamic plays with both his arm and legs. Dorsey runs well, possesses a strong arm, and has the physical tools coaches look for in a modern quarterback. There is still plenty of development ahead as he works toward a varsity role, but his upside is obvious. If he continues progressing the way we expect, Dorsey has all the intangibles to develop into a future D1 prospect.      2029 Martinsburg WR [player_tooltip player_id='1716377' first='Christian' last='Irving'] is another reason the Bulldogs' freshman class is viewed as one of the best groups in the state. Irving earned meaningful varsity snaps as a freshman, which is never easy to do at a program with the depth and expectations that Martinsburg carries year after year. His size already made him a valuable perimeter blocker, with plenty of playmaking upside still waiting to be unlocked as his role in the passing game continues to expand. The flashes he showed early suggest there is much more production ahead as he gains experience and opportunities. Irving is one of several prospects in Martinsburg's 2029 class with D1 potential, and we expect him to steadily develop into one of the top receivers in West Virginia over the next few seasons.   <figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper"> https://twitter.com/Christiani57834/status/2000903113926906276 </div></figure>     2029 Martinsburg WR [player_tooltip player_id='1716378' first='Jeremiah' last='Brown'] is one of three Bulldog receivers already ranked inside the Top 15, a testament to the talent assembled in this class. Brown was one of my favorite evaluations from his freshman team film, consistently flashing the athleticism and playmaking ability that translate well to the next level. He is a plus athlete who can create explosive plays once the ball gets into his hands, and there is still plenty of development ahead. As he moves through the program, I expect Brown to quickly emerge as a contributor on the varsity level and become one of the top receivers in the class. He has significant upside, and I would not be surprised if he eventually pushes for the top spot among wide receivers in the 2029 rankings. Alongside [player_tooltip player_id='1716377' first='Christian' last='Irving'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1716432' first='Nehemy' last='Appiah'], Brown gives Martinsburg the foundation of what could become the best receiver trio in West Virginia over the next few years.      2029 South Charleston DL [player_tooltip player_id='1453201' first='Elijah' last='Mason'] made one of the biggest impacts of any freshman in the state last season and earned our Freshman Defensive Player of the Year honors as a result. Mason was highly productive for the Black Eagles and consistently disrupted opposing offenses with his quickness and relentless motor. What stands out most on film is how twitchy he is off the ball, allowing him to create havoc and be a mismatch up front for offensive linemen. Size is the one factor that could ultimately affect his long-term ceiling as a prospect, but it has not prevented him from producing at a high level against varsity competition. D2 programs have already taken notice of his ability, and that interest will continue to grow. With the way he plays and the production he has already posted, expect Mason's name to remain a familiar one across the state over the next three years.      2029 University DL [player_tooltip player_id='1716475' first='Keenan' last='Brown'] was strongly considered for the top defensive line spot in the class and sits right alongside [player_tooltip player_id='1453201' first='Elijah' last='Mason'] as one of the premier young defensive prospects in West Virginia. Brown may not possess prototypical size compared to some national recruits, but his freshman film was too productive to ignore. He made an impact on both sides of the ball for the Hawks and consistently showed the toughness and physicality that coaches covet in the trenches. Brown moves well for his age and size, allowing him to make plays that many young linemen cannot. As the son of a D1 coach, his football IQ is apparent on film through his instincts, effort, and understanding of how to attack. Brown's combination of production, physical play, and football background gives him a strong foundation as he continues developing into one of the top defensive linemen in the 2029 class.      2029 Princeton RB [player_tooltip player_id='1716418' first='Aaron' last='Hood Jr'] is one of the more intriguing skill prospects in the class after a breakout freshman season at Mount View. Hood Jr showed he could be a difference-maker at the Class A level, and now we'll see how his game translates against tougher competition after transferring to Princeton. Based on what he put on tape as a freshman, there is plenty of reason for optimism, as Hood Jr is an agile, nimble runner who makes defenders miss in space and consistently runs with good balance through contact. He has natural elusiveness that is difficult to teach and allows him to generate extra yards and explosive plays. If his production and playmaking ability carry over to the Class AAA level as expected, Hood Jr has the potential to establish himself as one of the top overall prospects in West Virginia's 2029 class.
