While splitting carries with senior Drew Thompson, Cooper was able to generate far more production, rushing for 1311 yards (8.5 YPC) and 17 TDs. Even though he didn't carry a full workload, Cooper was so effective with the reps he did receive, showcasing a perfect mix of power, speed, and a low center of gravity to consistently run over defenders while also utilizing his 4.5 40 yard speed to dash past defenders, making him the ultimate weapon in the backfield. Cooper shall remain to be the centerpiece of the Rams' offense as they look to reclaim their throne in the 5A conference.

[player_tooltip player_id='1361313' first='Dawson' last='Kahl'] became one of the premiere backs in 5A after transferring to Prairie from City High to finish as the Hawks' most effective rusher to drive their offense. Kahl ran for 1049 yards (7.5 YPC) and 8 rushing TDs. Kahl may be better regarded for his cutback ability and dangerous straight-line speed (4.55 40 yard time), but Kahl is just as capable as a persistent runner who is able to effortlessly shake off defenders and prove difficult to tackle from the side, proving too fast for LBs and too big for DBs to tackle. Kahl holds a D1 offer from Northern Iowa and is bound to receive more as he enters his senior season looking to drive the Hawks' toward a deep run in the 5A playoffs.

South Hardin has generated attention over the last few years for their strength in the passing game, but it's hard to ignore how fast [player_tooltip player_id='2050089' first='Kameron' last='Adams'] has grown into a force for the Tigers' offense. Adams took over as the varsity starter in 2025 and ran for 1283 yards (6.3 YPC) and 14 TDs. Adams immediately stepped up to the plate and delivered greatly as the lead work-horse in the backfield, attacking his lanes with aggression, proving slippery to tackle, and once he broke into the open field, there was simply no catching him with his breakaway speed. Adams' role for the Tigers' offense will be even bigger in 2026 with a new QB under Center going forward.

Clarinda's strength on offense came with a three-headed attack in the backfield, with 3 rushers amassing over 500+ yards on the ground, with sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='1696458' first='Baylor' last='Hash'] breaking out to lead that rushing attack. Hash finished with 686 rushing yards (5.4 YPC) and 6 TDs in 2025. Hash was a wrecking ball on the ground, bouncing off defenders with ease, keeping his balance even through some very hard hits to drive forward for extra yardage or to the endzone. Hash is an excellent fit for what the Cardinals want to do on the ground, which is slam the ball down their opponents' throats, and he should remain a vital asset on both sides of the ball going forward.

After a strong debut during his sophomore campaign, [player_tooltip player_id='1621113' first='Drew' last='Bergfeld'] solidified his place as one of the driving forces of the Bobcats' offense. Bergfeld ran for 1256 yards (7.9 YPC) and 18 TDs last season. Bergfeld is another standout noted for his speed, and recently he was part of the winning group for the Sprint Relay competition at the 2026 Drake Relays. Bergfeld is also an excellent downhill rusher, almost like watching a bowling ball running full speed into defenders and knocking them out of the way, while also being able to change direction on a dime and maintain good balance through contact. Even more impressive was the fact that he didn't play in the 2nd half of four games due to how effective he was on the field, and Bergfeld will be the core piece for Western Dubuque as they willl look to push deep in the 4A playoffs in 2026.

Maybe not the most prevalent name in a fairly deep backfield, but [player_tooltip player_id='1943027' first='Ian' last='Kelley'] showed a lot of promise with the reps that he did receive during the 2025 season. Kelley ran for 263 yards (6 YPC) and 3 TDs in 2025, finishing as the Clippers' 2nd-leading rusher last season. Matching with his smaller frame, Kelley plays with a low center of gravity and has a strong lower body, allowing him to fit his way through tight gaps, showing quick agility and cutback ability, and his power should not be ignored as he's able to hold his own driving through defenders on the run, setting up a block for his teammate, and playing at Nose Guard for the defense. Kelley should see some more carries entering his senior season and it will be intriguing to see how he will produce with a heavier workload.

Sergeant Bluff-Luton has one of the deepest backfields in the entire state, and despite getting a lighter workload among the Warriors' potent run-offense, [player_tooltip player_id='2049029' first='Brody' last='Van Kalsbeek'] was able to get the most out of his limited carries. Van Kalsbeek ran for 285 yards (7.3 YPC) and 4 TDs, finishing with the 3rd highest YPC average among his teammates who had at least 20+ carries in 2025. A powerful runner who boasts more size and physicality in comparison to his fellow running mates, Van Kalsbeek uses that to his advantage as he was able to bull his way through defenders, and he was a nightmare to tackle in the open-field as he was able to shake off defenders coming from the side with ease. Van Kalsbeek will look to receive more carries in the backfield in 2026, and while not as the primary RB, Van Kalsbeek should not be ignored as a dangerous force to go against when he's in the backfield.
