Our Prep Redzone Exposure Camp was on Friday, as over 70 athletes from across the state (and a few from out of state) came to compete in front of college coaches. We're well into our extensive coverage of the event. We've already taken a bird's-eye view of the camp, and we're in the process of breaking down every player in attendance by position. Let's keep going with our positional breakdowns as we evaluate the five linebackers in attendance.

We had five linebackers in attendance on Friday. Here are some scouting notes on each.

2027 Tweeners

I want to start with two 2027s who have plenty of talent, but are complicated evaluations.

Both [player_tooltip player_id='1692741' first='Jackson' last='Laws'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2166397' first='Tyler' last='Hodges'] are bigger linebacker/edge prospects, weighing in over 220 pounds. Interestingly, I think both guys will switch positions in college, swapping roles.

Laws plays off the edge for Cannon School, where he finished second in the NCISAA with 19 sacks last season. He measured in at 6'2," 221 pounds and ran a 4.75-second 40, adding a 7.06 L-Drill and 4.50 shuttle for good measure. He certainly moves well enough to play linebacker at the next level, and his lack of elite length might keep him away from full-time edge rusher, at least at the level he could be recruited to play off the ball. Of course, his power, bend, and pass-rushing prowess would allow him to blitz.

More than all of that, Laws simply looked comfortable in linebacker drills, which means he doesn't need to force a future at edge. If he needs to move off the ball, he shouldn't have much trouble doing so.

Hodges plays middle linebacker for Willow Spring, but he's at his best rushing the passer. While he thrived in linebacker drills, he occasionally plays a bit high and stiff. He has plenty of power to play edge, and he's an explosive athlete, with a 9'1" broad jump. I love how he moves laterally and on the snap, and with some time spent honing his pass-rushing arsenal, the 6'3," 245-pounder should be a fierce edge rusher, especially with a six-foot-five wingspan.

As far as his football I.Q. and athleticism go, both should make any potential move that much easier. All of that being said, one more note: I was actually really impressed with Hodges' coverage skills, something I didn't see much of on film.

Promising Young Athletes

2028 linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='2166423' first='Tyler' last='Carson'] didn't play a ton last year for Reagan, but that could change in 2025. I was a fan of the way he moved, and was a bit surprised at how well he moved. He showed great anticipation as a pass defender, and the recovery speed to make plays even if he wasn't in perfect position.

2029s [player_tooltip player_id='2126975' first='Josiah' last='Werts'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2166011' first='Nick' last='Massey'] each flashed. Werts has already established himself as a talented varsity player, and made our list of the top linebackers in Forsyth County. He always seems to play at full speed and showed the type of early athleticism we like to see from young linebackers.

Massey moved well, and he has the frame to add weight without losing speed. He looked solid in drills, especially when it came to squaring up running backs in the hole. With some more time and coaching, he's going to continue growing into a talented three-down linebacker.
