Our Prep Redzone Exposure Camp was on Friday, as over 70 athletes from across the state (and a few from out of state) came to compete in front of college coaches. We're well into our extensive coverage of the event. We've already taken a bird's-eye view of the camp, and we're in the process of breaking down every player in attendance by position. We're finally winding down, and we'll end our positional breakdowns by looking at every defensive back in attendance.

Breaking Down the PRZ Exposure Camp DBs

Check out our other PRZ Camp Pieces:

All-Camp Offense
All-Camp Defense
Underclassmen Accolades
PRZ Camp Winners
Testing Leaders
QB Breakdown
RB Breakdown
WR Breakdown
OL Breakdown
DL Breakdown
LB Breakdown

We had 10 defensive backs in attendance on Friday. Here are some scouting notes on each.

Young Guys Deliver

[player_tooltip player_id='1163065' first='Exavier' last='Allen'] is moving to Franklinton where he joins an impressive secondary. He had a quiet night, and that's usually pretty good for a defensive back. He didn't run the 40, but had a wildly impressive 6.96-second L-Drill, which speaks well to his change-of-direction ability. He's long and lean, and should have a great sophomore season.

There were a couple of raw, high-upside DBs in attendance. [player_tooltip player_id='2199010' first='King' last='Young'] of Hough ran a solid 40, then had one of the best broad jumps. It's obvious that he's well-coached, and he had some clean pass breakups.

ALA-Johnston's [player_tooltip player_id='2176519' first='Nana' last='Takyi-Mensah'] really surprised me in a good way. He's long, agile, and uses his length well. With a 76-inch wingspan, he can reach balls others can't, and he was highly successful in one-on-ones. I frankly didn't expect him to be one of the best defensive backs, given the other talent in attendance, but I was highly impressed.

Finally, Rolesville's [player_tooltip player_id='2199082' first='Caleb' last='Freeman'] had a nice night. A bit undersized, he has good recovery speed, and matched up well with bigger receivers. I was pleased with how he looked in both drills and one-on-ones.

Small-School Rising Juniors

We had two class of 2028 defensive backs on Friday, and each flashed their potential.

Salisbury defensive back Justen Eldridge was a late addition to the camp, but I loved the impact he made. With little warm-up, Eldridge immediately put up a 7.21-second L-Drill and a 4.53 pro shuttle, both solid times for his age and size. He was then named one of the top defensive backs in attendance. Since he was both a late addition and a guy I didn't know much about, I hardly registered his impact until about midway through one-on-ones. After that, I watched closely and came away impressed with his length and ball skills.

ALA-Johnston defensive back [player_tooltip player_id='2192740' first='Yandel' last='Miranda'] made some nice plays, and he has smooth movement skills. He's still developing as a pure cover guy, but the potential is there, and I think he could have an excellent junior season.

Impact 2027s

There were several impact rising seniors from the RDU area who I was excited to see on Friday, and all of them delivered.

[player_tooltip player_id='2100553' first='Brandon' last='Lindsey'], newly transferred to Southeast Alamance from Eastern Alamance, is a ball-hawking safety who was excellent on Friday. He has great anticipation, so while his bread and butter isn't press-man coverage, he was able to make some plays in one-on-ones by predicting where the ball could go. He was clocked at 4.63 seconds in the 40 and had a nine-foot broad jump, too.

Wake Prep's [player_tooltip player_id='2158963' first='Noah' last='Taylor'] showed me everything I needed to see to feel good about projecting him to the FCS level. He's long, fast, and plays with great poise and anticipation. He's an "off the bus" guy who can actually play, and we love that. He measured in at 6'2" with a 76-inch wingspan and ran at 4.61-second 40 with a 9'9" broad jump.

[player_tooltip player_id='1691097' first='Zion' last='McDonald'] is transferring from ALA-Johnston to Cleveland after a huge season as a box safety. That's an important role on defense, but one that doesn't usually thrive in a camp setting. But McDonald had a great night with a 4.61-second 40 and plenty of solid defensive plays.

[player_tooltip player_id='683130' first='Ra'Sean' last='Williams'] was probably my overall MVP for the entire camp. He hounded receivers all night, and that was after he finished in the top 10 of all four athletic tests, including a camp-best 4.47-second 40 and 9'6" broad jump.

Perhaps the most impressive rep of the night was in best-on-best, when Williams insisted on covering a 6'5" tight end, a guy with nine inches on him. Williams mirrored well at the line, flipped his hips, opened up out of the break, and made a clean pass breakup with a huge vertical.

We'll have plenty more to come from our Prep Redzone Exposure Camp this week, including breakdowns of the other position groups and some unique angles to keep our content fresh and relevant. We're updating rankings soon, so keep it locked in with Prep Redzone.

Want to share Prep Redzone with a friend?
