Hidden Gems in the 2027 Class Who Can Rise This Summer

The offseason camp cycle is almost fully underway, but that isn't stopping me from naming a few players who will likely pick up more attention as the summer progresses.   Check out these five NE 2027s who deserve more looks on the recruiting trail:   <hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />    The Griffins look primed to be a contender in Class B again with a great returning core. Safety [player_tooltip player_id='1192404' first='MJ' last='Maryott'] will once again be a key player on defense after recording 30 tackles and two interceptions. Watching MJ's tape, I was very impressed with his versatility on the backside of the defense. He mainly lined up as a free safety, but also showed the football IQ to slip into a nickel/slot role or even out on the perimeter against the opposing WR1. MJ is very fluid in coverage, as he can quickly flip his hips and has the agility to change direction on the fly. His range, combined with his ability to read offenses, makes him a dangerous center-field safety who is quick to break on the ball with great closing speed. MJ plays the ball very well at the catch point, showing he can force a turnover or a PBU. Good tackler who can make sure tackles in the open field and is an asset in the run game as someone who is willing to step into the box. Great prospect who should turn some heads this camp season!      Omaha North's [player_tooltip player_id='1085195' first='Anthony' last='Kellogg II'] looks ready for a breakout senior campaign as he could work himself into bigger roles on offense and defense. Anthony played in only three games as a junior; however, he flashed in his limited reps, tallying 2.5 TFLs and a sack. Anthony is still a raw prospect, but he possesses the tools to be a stud at the next level with great size at 6'3" and 210 pounds and a solid motor. At tight end, Anthony was mainly used as a blocker, where he could take advantage of his size and strength to clear out second-level defenders. Defensively, I can see Anthony being used as a defensive end or outside linebacker, depending on how he continues to fill out his frame. He plays with good explosiveness off the ball and can use his hands to disengage from defenders effectively. Good pursuit to the ball with the lateral quickness to get to ball carriers before they're able to do too much damage. Sleeper prospect with a high upside.      Look for a bounce-back season from the Southwest Silver Hawks that should start with being strong in the trenches, thanks to players like senior [player_tooltip player_id='2110872' first='Ryan' last='Miller']. Ryan was a trustworthy center who was consistent in delivering the ball and could more than hold his own as a blocker. Although some metrics might list Ryan as "undersized," I think he can play bigger than his listed size and has shown consistent technique. Ryan does a great job keeping his base low and balanced with the ability to anchor down effectively. He uses his natural leverage to win that battle against his opponent, then taps into his powerful leg drive to move defenders off the ball. Ryan flashed good pop in his hands and was fairly accurate with his hand placement, keeping them tight and inside when engaging with his opponent. Good footwork. Ryan's aggressiveness in the run game was also great to see as he looks to earn the "road-grader" title on every play. Sound prospect who can be plug-and-play at the next level!      Roncalli Catholic's [player_tooltip player_id='1588492' first='Jacob' last='Retallick'] is a player who went relatively under the radar despite a very productive junior season. Last season, Jacob tallied 70 tackles, 10.5 TFLs, a sack, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. My biggest takeaway from watching Jacob's junior tape is that this dude has next-level instincts on the field. He excels as an off-ball linebacker who can sit back, diagnose the play, then break sharply on the ball and get there to deliver a big hit. Jacob displayed smart gap play, as he read his keys effectively and then did a good job of scraping along the line of scrimmage to avoid getting caught up with blockers. Very good lateral burst when closing on the ball and even made some impressive stops when flying in from the play's backside. Jacob's motor is the type you love to see from your inside linebacker, as he runs at 100% from snap to whistle and never seems to lose his mean streak. Get after this guys ASAP!      2026 could be the season that the SRC Huskies get over the hump and make a championship run with players like [player_tooltip player_id='1699843' first='Carter' last='Eickmeier'] leading the charge. Carter balled out as a junior, totaling 184 carries, 1,357 rushing yards, 24 rushing touchdowns, 44 tackles, five TFLs, and a sack. Carter may not be the biggest back, but he attacks every carry with elite hustle. Eickmeier is a type of runner who possesses the strength and balance to fight off tackles, but also has enough "punch" in his acceleration to break away for the home run ball. He sees the field very well and is patient to follow his blocks, while also having the twitch to weave through traffic. Eickmeier's ability to hit the corner and then hit his next gear as he clears the second level is what keeps opposing defensive coordinators up at night. Very tough player to tackle due to his low, powerful base and constantly pumping legs... you should also expect a shoulder or mean stiff arm coming your way.
