2029 Watchlist Spotlight: Linebackers to Know

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The 2029 linebacker group is already showing early signs of impact, with a number of young defenders flashing instincts, range, and physicality at the second level. As they continue to gain reps and refine their game, these prospects are beginning to separate themselves as names to know moving forward.</strong></h2>    <p class="text-gray-700">Escalera is an aggressive interior LB that has the skillset to be a three down defender. 5'11” 190 lbs. he's got a strong frame with good build in both his upper and lower halves. Demonstrates that he can fill gaps with hard pursuit and good leverage. Effectively drops back into zone coverage and steps into throwing lanes to play the ball and the receiver. Does a good job timing out his blitz's and getting quick penetration to make a ton of plays at or behind the LOS. Galindo is a downhill defensive playmaker. Good instincts and reactionary quickness to anticipate play location and fly to the ball. High football IQ with good assignment awareness and eye discipline to be in the correct position against both the run and pass. Like his ability to navigate through traffic and tightly avoid blockers on his way to the ball carrier. Good nose for the football he shows good feel and awareness of play location and offensive flow. Good ability to take on blockers and then disengage to free himself up to pursue the ball. Strong at the POA, showing good leg drive and forward momentum to finish ball carriers to the ground aggressively. Plays hard and confident to be an impact defensive player with upside and potential as he develops.</p>     <p class="text-gray-700">Impressive freshmen campaign on varsity for the Maryvale LB that was voted First Team All Region and All District for the 2025 season. 5'11” 181 lbs. he's an attacking defender that is consistently around the football. Shows quick processing ability of his reads and a fast downhill trigger to break on the ball and close space. Can beat blockers with both speed and power flashing good lateral agility to work around and hand strength to shed. Chases hard in pursuit and is tough to break once he gets his hands on the ball carrier. He checks a lot of boxes in terms of physical skillset and athleticism at 6'2” 185 lbs. He's got the length colleges look for and the growth potential to add mass while maintaining his speed. Wide skillset to line up and be effective as a hybrid edge rusher or perimeter box OLB. Excels as a pass rusher that can collapse the pocket off the edge with good initial quickness and speed. Flashes natural movement skills with the change of direction and short area burst to redirect and close space on the ball carrier. Shows he can stop and stack blockers at the POA with good hand placement/usage. He's a plus athlete with a quick downhill break on the ball and good closing speed. Patient with his footwork he limits wasted movement by knowing before he goes. Shows he can work laterally down the line and scrape over the top while staying square to play ball carriers on the perimeter. Plays fast and full speed showing no hesitation at the contact point. He's able to anchor down and drive at the POA to limit yards after contact and finish with power.
