We're still 6 months away from the 2026 season, but there's no better time to predict breakout stars during the offseason who have flashed in the past but haven't fully broken out yet. The transfer landscape has yet to be finalized, which may impact some of these predictions in the future. However, here is one player from each school, listed in alphabetical order, that we believe will have a breakout season.

2027 RB/DB [player_tooltip player_id='1161083' first='Phillip' last='Shields'] was one of the few steady sparks for Washington during a difficult 2025 campaign, and his junior season showed why the Patriots leaned on him so heavily. He finished with nearly 1,000 total yards, including 630 on the ground, and found the end zone five times while regularly carrying the offensive workload. His explosiveness and competitiveness show up every time he touches the ball, but his long-term projection still points toward defensive back, where his athletic profile fits naturally. If Shields' development continues, he has the tools to become one of the more disruptive defensive backs in the class while remaining a dangerous offensive weapon for the Patriots in 2026 and earn postseason accolades.

Wayne handed the keys to its offense to a freshman last season, and 2029 QB [player_tooltip player_id='2111879' first='Trai' last='Hayton'] showed enough early to make him a name worth monitoring moving forward. Physically, he already looks the part at 6'0 210 with a sturdy build that should only continue to develop as he matures. Being the younger brother of highly regarded 2026 ATH [player_tooltip player_id='1139001' first='Kaiden' last='Hayton'], he has grown up around the game and carries himself with the confidence you expect from that background. The next phase of his growth will come with experience, learning how to manage the offense and continue refining the details of the quarterback position. If that progression continues over the next couple of seasons, Hayton has the early tools to become a major piece of Wayne's future and one of the more intriguing young prospects in the 2029 class.

[player_tooltip player_id='862717' first='Eli' last='Amos'] returned to Webster County last season after spending time at Cabell Midland and quickly reminded people what he brings to the Highlanders' lineup. The 2027 RB/LB finished as the team's leading rusher with 635 yards and 3 touchdowns while also producing 85 tackles and 6 tackles for loss on defense, a workload that reflects how involved he was in every phase of the game. Amos runs with patience and vision, showing the ability to find creases and use his quickness to slip past defenders in tight space. That same urgency shows up defensively, where he closes quickly and finishes tackles with confidence. Heading into his senior year, the expectation is that Webster County continues to lean on him as one of the focal points of the roster. If he builds on last season's production and continues refining his all-around game, Amos has the tools to turn a strong return season into an even more impactful senior campaign.

[player_tooltip player_id='2149404' first='Izaigha' last='George'] enters his senior offseason at Weir as one of the players capable of helping spark a turnaround after a difficult winless season. The 2027 WR earned Honorable Mention All-OVAC recognition as a junior and brings a skill set that can stress defenses in several ways. At 5'9 175, he plays with quick burst and twitch, showing the speed to threaten vertically while also being dangerous on screens and short throws where he can create space after the catch. George's elusiveness makes him a difficult player to square up in the open field, and his playmaking ability could become even more important as the Red Riders begin a new chapter under a new head coach in 2026. If the offense finds ways to feature him more consistently, George has the tools to turn his senior season into a much larger impact and become one of the primary playmakers in the program's reset.

[player_tooltip player_id='2149398' first='Bradyn' last='Waldron']'s first year running the offense at Westside offered a glimpse of what the Renegades may have at quarterback. The 2028 QB stepped into the starting role as a sophomore and operated within a run-heavy scheme that limited passing volume, yet he still finished with 550 yards and five touchdowns through the air. Waldron also brings value as a standout basketball player, and that athletic background shows up in his athletic ability and dual-threat potential with the ball in his hands. With a full season of varsity experience now behind him, the next phase of his development will be expanding the passing offense when opportunities arise. If that growth comes to fruition over the next two seasons, Waldron has the potential to open up the playbook for Westside and become a central piece of the Renegades' offense.

2027 Wheeling Central RB/LB [player_tooltip player_id='1304656' first='Dustin' last='Sanner'] heads into his senior season with a chance to remind people why he is considered one of the top linebacker prospects in the 2027 class. An early injury limited him to just five games as a junior, but even in that short stretch, he managed to finish among the team's top tacklers and showed the same disruptive traits that have made him such a highly regarded defender. Sanner plays with a relentless motor and burst off the edge, regularly generating pressure and making momentum-shifting plays behind the line of scrimmage. Against the run, he sets firm edges and forces ball carriers back into traffic, the type of physical presence that anchors a defense. Now fully healthy, the expectation is that he returns to being one of the Maroon Knights' most impactful players with an opportunity to emerge at running back in 2026 as well. If he stays on the field and produces the way he has when healthy, Sanner has every tool to put together a dominant senior campaign on both sides of the ball and solidify himself among the top linebackers in the class.
