Prep Redzone Iowa dropped a Class of 2028 rankings update at the end of last month. That followed a final update on the 2026 Class and an update on the 2027s.

We'll finish off the latest run with the unveiling of our initial 2029 rankings. Please keep in mind, it's real early for the freshman class and just a starting point for us.

Here's a closer look at guys in that recruiting cycle that you'll find in the upcoming release:

DeRouchey spent his freshman year of 2025 operating on the non-varsity level. He was one of the few ninth-graders listed on Centennial's varsity roster, however. In a program that ranks among the state's best at developing talent for the next level, that's likely a good sign in terms of how the coaching staff views him. If you combine that line of thinking with his highlight video from the fall, and there's reason to believe DeRouchey could help the varsity as early as next season. The youngster brings a well-rounded skill set to the receiver position. He runs crisp routes and understands body positioning to gain an advantage. If he gets into space, DeRouchey flashes the speed to take it the distance.

Miller was the lone freshman position player to record statistics for the DeWitt Central varsity in 2025. For a Class 3A playoff team, he caught an 11-yard pass and recorded 3.5 tackles. There's not a lot of footage housed on Miller's Hudl page. We do see the "varsity reception", which was more of a toss. He did the heavy lifting on the play, speeding through the defense. On the other clip, which was against non-varsity competition, Miller takes a short pass and flies up the sideline, flying by the defense. The ninth-grader stands out for his advanced skills and size for his age. He's one to watch moving forward.

MOC-Floyd Valley only had two freshmen record statistics on the varsity in 2025, and Samuels was one of them. He carried the ball once and registered 3.0 tackles. Samuels spent the rest of his time developing in hopes of a larger role next season. He hasn't posted any clips on his Hudl page from this past fall, but we can see him in action as an eighth-grader. Samuels is bigger, strong and faster than the competition. That tracks with the multi-sport path he's on. Samuels is playing basketball this winter, and reports running the 200 meters in 22:4 seconds and the 100 in 12.3. Keep an eye on this kid.

Greene Country employed a limited number of freshmen on the varsity in 2025, and Daubendiek was the most productive of the bunch. He recorded 9.5 tackles in laying the foundation for a potential breakout next season as a sophomore. In addition to helping out the program's top team, Daubendiek sharpened his skills on the lower levels. We can see much of that when checking out his Hudl page. The footage doesn't capture him on defense, however. The clips showcase Daubendiek as an H-Back, where he has a good feel for blocking before releasing and dinging defenses after the catch. He's also a willing and able blocker when given the assignment. Daubendiek is physically advanced for his age.

Schwieger mostly developed his skills on the non-varsity level at Prairie as a freshman in 2025. It's a program that annually produces prospects for colleges, and Schwieger will look to take the next step in that process during the upcoming campaign. He took a considerable step forward in the fall if the film on his Hudl page is any indication. An explosive athlete, Schwieger opens up the highlights with a long touchdown catch, blazing by the defender. He's quick to edge and often outruns the opponent starting with a burst. Schwieger is difficult to square up in space and strong. He's an aggressive defender and a dangerous returner, too.

Bishop Heelan reached the Class 3A state championship game in the fall largely on the backs of a veteran roster. In a program that annually develops student-athletes for the next level, underclassmen are working behind the scenes to be the next collection of success stories. Rees has the look of one of those guys. You can watch his highlights from competing at the junior varsity and freshman teams HERE. An impactful two-way performer, he reports catching eight passes for 181 yards and four touchdowns, and collecting 41.0 tackles, nine tackles for loss and two sacks in seven games. Rees flashes potential as a big-play pass catcher and a well-rounded linebacker. He has a good feel for game flow and is technically advanced for his age.
