He keeps his eyes downfield under pressure, shows he can throw on the run across his body and make off-platform throws with ease and does not lose zip on the ball on out-breaking routes. He throws with good anticipation, air under the deep ball and throws his receivers open over the top and throws a tight spiral with good spin and velocity. He is a smooth runner that stays patient behind his blocks with cutback abilities and has a burst after the first level while running behind pads with proper leverage and forward lean through contact. He is also a natural pass catcher out of the backfield with consistent hands, quickly knifes upfield and can make off-platform plays in open space with body control and balance. He has closing speed, is a excellent tackler in the hole and packs a punch at the POA against bigger backs/ball carriers. He flashes the ability to make plays outside the tackles and redirect quickly while always trying to punch the ball out and force a turnover. Pre-snap he is a very high IQ player that can sniff out plays and quickly knife into the backfield taking the proper angles through or around blockers and is a downhill violent hitter in the box. He has a live arm, can extend plays with his legs outside the pocket and keeps his eyes downfield while accurate with the deep ball and puts the ball in places only his guys can get it. He is not afraid to take hole shots over the middle or throw outside the hashes and shows he does not lose zip on the ball while on the run. Portmann can do tons of damage with his legs as well as he shows a good initial burst outside the pocket and downfield speed with some wiggle in space to make tacklers miss and force poor angles.
